The MIT Solve program seeks passionate young innovators aged 24 and under who implement solutions that have positive impacts in their communities and the world. The Solv[ED] Youth Innovation Challenge is an opportunity to submit tech-based solutions that address one of four thematic areas: Learning, Health, Sustainability and Economic Prosperity, for example, innovations that can reduce the effects of climate change. 10 winners will receive prize funding and mentorship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Garden Club of America — Awards in Tropical Botany and Horticulture
The Garden Club of America (GCA) offers several grants, prizes, and fellowships for students enrolled at universities in the USA, including some awards that have a tropical focus. The GCA Awards in Tropical Botany are open to PhD candidates (application deadline is 15 January). The Anne Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany is open to PhD students and recent PhD graduates (deadline is 31 January). The Lou McCandless Marks Scholarship in Tropical Horticulture is restricted to U.S. citizens who are graduate students or advanced undergraduate students (deadline is 01 February). European Commission — Floating Wind Energy Deployment
The European Commission (EC) offers grants for innovation on floating wind energy deployment optimized for deep waters and different sea basins (Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, North-east Atlantic Ocean). The proposal is expected to deploy in one of the sea basins in Europe. Applicants must be established in a Member State of the European Union, countries associated with Horizon Europe or low- and middle-income countries. The application deadline is 23 February 2023. SOAS University offers free massive open online courses (MOOCs) to get an introduction in a new subject. MOOCs are general level courses that require only one to two hours commitment each week. Courses include one on Global Energy and Climate Policy as well as other thematic areas in the broad scope of Global Diplomacy. Courses are online and self-paced. Link to available courses
U.S. Government — International Exchange Grant Program
The Office of Private Sector Exchange (BridgeUSA) announces an open competition for the administration of the 2023 BridgeUSA STEM Scholarship Fund. The Office plans to issue one cooperative agreement of approximately US$260 thousand to implement the program. U.S. public and private non-profit organizations may submit proposals to provide approximately 50 scholarships to foreign university students, scholars, and professionals across Africa, East Asia and Pacific, and Western Hemisphere regions. AstraZeneca — Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being)
The Young One World Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 3 seeks youth-led projects which tackle the causes of air pollution and focus on the long-term health of young people. Projects should focus on individual behavior change, new technologies, or multi-stakeholder advocacy approaches to change laws/policies. The challenge welcomes solutions from young innovators (18-30 years old). The winner will receive a US$50 thousand project startup grant and 12-months of mentorship from a team of AstraZeneca Young Health Program professionals. The application deadline is 30 November 2022. Earth Journalism Network — Biodiversity Fellowships for Journalists
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) announces fellowships for journalists interested in attending and reporting from the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (December 2022). Eight journalists will be selected for the fellowship and receive resources and tools to help prepare for reporting at the conference. Journalists may produce stories in print, online, radio or broadcast formats. EJN will cover airfare, accommodation, meals, travel insurance, and transportation costs. Ocean Foundation — Opportunity for Young Writers
The Ocean Foundation (TOF) seeks to identify young writers between the ages of 13-25 to provide curriculum writing services for the production of a “youth ocean action toolkit” focused on the seven Ocean Literacy Principles and Marine Protected Areas. The Ocean Foundation will assemble a small team of youth authors. The authors will work with members of the TOF team to create the youth ocean action toolkit. Sparrow makes grants to PhD and PostDoc students looking to share their research in environment and climate change. Applicants have to write a 3-minute distilled digest about their research that is easy for the everyday reader to understand. The winner receives US$500. Global Biodiversity Information Facility — Management of Specimen Data
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is developing a new data model to enable the publication of richer, more complex types of biodiversity data in the future. Therefore, GBIF seeks pilot projects showcasing how an emerging unified data model can improve how data derived from specimens in scientific collections are represented in GBIF. Applicants selected through this call for proposals will work with the Secretariat to populate a pilot database used to demonstrate a queryable online specimen catalog.
