MedPAN launches a new call for small projects to support Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean. This call targets co-management approaches for Marine Protected Areas. The call is only open to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Turkey, and Albania. MedPAN’s contribution will be €20 thousand per project (matching contributions of 25 % are required). MaRINET2 is working towards unlocking the energy potential of our oceans. The transnational access program offers free-of-charge access to the research and testing facilities of the MaRINET2 network. MaRINET2 provides a contribution of €1000 per week towards travel and subsistence expenses. In 2020 one period of access with a 6-month duration will be organised. The European Commission seeks proposals for approaches or technologies to improve marine spatial planning and conservation (or restoration) of coastal ecosystems. This call focuses on the demonstration of technologies to clean the seafloor and the surface of nearshore waters from historically accumulated plastics and microplastics as well as from other accumulated marine litter. The Commission considers proposals of up to €6 million. International cooperations and legal entities established in EU Member States, Overseas Countries and Territories (full list in the call document) are eligible to apply. The Nippon Foundation makes its overseas grants to nonprofit organizations based outside of Japan. Particular interests in this program area include legal, policy, and governance issues in maritime affairs; support for multilateral networks on ocean issues; and marine environmental management and oceanography. Applications are accepted from non-profit organizations based outside of Japan. They can be regional or international NGOs/NPOs, including educational and research institutions. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) invites submissions for the call for proposals on Sustainable Alternative Livelihood Projects for Marine Protected Areas in the Republic of Mauritius. The call aims to mainstream the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services into coastal zone management. Eligibility extends to non-governmental organizations in the Republic of Mauritius and Rodrigues. Proposal amounts should be of a maximum of US$50 thousand. The NAM S&T Centre invites applications from scientists from the developing countries for the Joint NAM S&T Centre – ZMT Bremen (Germany) Fellowship in Tropical Coastal Marine Research. Under this scheme, five selected scientists will work with senior researchers and faculty members in fields related to Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Geology, and Tropical Coastal Marine Systems; and undertaking short-term joint research projects for a period of up to 3 months. The National Geographic Society seeks proposals for its program “Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution” from all around the world. The aim is to explore solutions to reduce marine plastic pollution (including behavior change). Projects may be focused around conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Geographic priorities include known hot spots that contribute most to the ocean plastic pollution problem. Preference will be given to applicants who are residents or citizens of the country of fieldwork as well as to projects with strong local capacity development components. EuroMarine announces funding to support workshops, working groups, and training and capacity building in themes of marine conservation and management. Workshop activities receive up to €7,500; working groups addressing strategic services or issues receive up to €5,000. Proposals should engage at least three EuroMarine full member organizations in two or more countries. The International Marine Conservation Congress and Society for Conservation Biology Marine Section offer Diversity Travel Grants for delegates from developing countries (as defined by the World Bank). The Diversity Travel Grants will help offset some of the costs for qualifying delegates to present at the SCB Marine Section’s 29th International Congress for Conservation Biology (IMCC 2019) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 21-25 July 2019.
