The Young Champions of the Earth honors young people from around the world with outstanding ideas to protect and restore the environment. UNEP seeks ideas and solutions that showcase nature’s potential in addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The winner receives US$20 thousand in seed funding. Eligibility extends to young environmentalists with at least 6 months of experience in protecting or restoring the environment. Lush Retail, Inc. — Animal Protection, Environment, and Human Rights
Lush makes grants through a Charity Pot to small grassroots organizations for projects in environment, animal protection, and human rights. It prefers to support projects which aim to change opinion and behavior through raising awareness of issues, activism, and education and campaigning. Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World — Early-Career Fellowship
The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) supports female scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with doctoral fellowships in the natural sciences. The early-career fellowships are for the pursuit of a doctoral degree at a host institution in a developing country that is not the applicant’s home country. The Fellowship is for two years and provides up to US$50 thousand. Applicants should be qualified young women science graduates (generally below 40 years of age), who have an M.Sc. degree or outstanding B.Sc. in the natural sciences. The eligible scientific fields include agricultural sciences; biological systems and organisms; and many others. The deadline for submission of applications is 14 March 2024. Canada Fund for Local Initiatives — Community Projects in Vietnam
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives invites proposals that meet the needs of local communities in Vietnam. The priorities under this call include women’s economic rights, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, and investing in the poorest and most vulnerable (which may include agriculture or aquaculture projects), as well as environment, climate action focusing on adaptation and mitigation, and water management. The average contribution is C$15 thousand to C$30 thousand per project. Eligibility extends to local community organizations, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. Fondation Segré — Conservation Action Fund
Fondation Segré provides support to address global conservation efforts specifically focusing on the conservation of globally threatened ungulate species as recognized by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The calls aim to safeguard their habitats, address the threats they face, and promote the well-being of both the species themselves and the communities that share the same ecosystems. The maximum grant size for conservation action support is €50 thousand for a maximum duration of 12 months. The maximum grant size for research support is €7 thousand. The Ocean Awards recognize individuals, community groups, organizations, and businesses that have made significant contributions to the health of the marine environment, to the sustainable management of marine resources, or to public engagement with the oceans and seas. Winners will receive media coverage and have a professional film about their achievements. Initiatives from all around the world can be nominated for the award. Convention on Biological Diversity — Bio-Bridge Initiative
The Bio-Bridge Initiative (BBI) provides seed funding of up to C$20 thousand to incubate projects and partnerships that promote exemplary approaches to address biodiversity-related issues and challenges. Governmental agencies, research and academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local communities in developing countries are eligible to apply. Earth Journalism Network — Story Grants for Indigenous Environmental Journalists
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers reporting grants to Indigenous journalists to support the production of in-depth environmental stories that call attention to climate justice, biodiversity, sustainable ecosystems, and other issues related to the rights and well-being of Indigenous peoples and communities. ENJ expects to award between 8-9 grants with an average budget of US$1,400 each. Applicants must self-identify as Indigenous or belonging to a tribe. Applicants can be from any country in the world. Marine Mammal Commission — Grants to Protect Marine Mammals 2024
The Marine Mammal Commission invites worldwide proposals on community-driven conservation approaches to eliminate, manage, or mitigate threats to marine mammals. The Commission supports projects on any subject in support of marine mammal conservation, protection, research, and management. All projects must include an outreach, communication, or engagement component that furthers marine mammal conservation or management efforts. Funding requests are limited to US$60 thousand. National Geographic Society — Exploration Grant
The National Geographic Society funds individuals working on projects in science, conservation, storytelling, education, and technology that align with one or more of their focus areas: Ocean, Land, Wildlife, Human History & Culture, Human Ingenuity. Level I grants receive funding up to US$20 thousand and offer unique opportunities for training, networking, coaching, and mentorship from fellow National Geographic experts. Level II grants are up to US$100 thousand. Currently, National Geographic Society seeks innovative photography, short film, writing, data visualization and other storytelling proposals to help water users understand the issues around global water sustainability.
