Research projects may address any terrestrial ecosystems, which are facing ongoing or predicted future degradation of their soil or groundwater systems. Please note that this call does not focus on agricultural soil management or the restoration of degraded ecosystems and their biodiversity. Bio-based Industries Consortium — Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking 2020
The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), under the program Horizon 2020, invites applications for the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) call for proposals. The objective of this call is to contribute to develop a more resource efficient and sustainable low carbon economy, particularly in rural areas, by using renewable biological resources for the production of bio-based products and biofuels. The call is open worldwide, however, only participants from EU, associated and developing countries are automatically eligible for funding. The call is open to academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and private enterprises. National Geographic Society — Species Recovery
The National Geographic Society seeks proposals that “stimulate, promote and support conservation actions for halting biodiversity decline, preventing species’ extinctions, and restoring and conserving intact habitats and ecosystems, both on the ground and in the water”. In partnership with the IUCN SSC, the goal is to halt further biodiversity decline by implementing species conservation plans. Funds are not restricted by taxon or region, but proposals must include principal investigators or participants resident in the country where the fieldwork will be conducted. U.S. Agency for International Development — Development of Food Security Activities in Ethiopia
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications for funding for the development of food security activities in Ethiopia. USAID plans to award up to four cooperative agreements with the goal to improve food security of vulnerable households in targeted communities, contributing to a sustained reduction in rural poverty. U.S. Department of State — Air Quality Management in Southeast Asia
The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, U.S. State Department, announces the “Building Air Quality Management Capacity in Southeast Asia” program. The project targets government entities with the intend to strengthen regulatory and monitoring capacity of government actors and expand awareness of air quality issues in Southeast Asian countries. The program intends to provide US$296,296 in funding to be used for the production of educational materials, expert workshops, and the development of a monitoring and evaluation plan to be used by key agencies. Countries eligible for funding under this award include: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Beyond Plastic Med — Reduce Plastic Pollution in the Mediterranean Islands
Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) launches a call for projects to reduce plastic pollution in the Mediterranean islands. BeMed’s contribution is €100 thousand per project (up to 70% of the total project value). Project duration should not exceed 24 months. The call is open all the countries around the Mediterranean. Proposed projects must target a Mediterranean island (or a set of islands). Organizations developing activities in the areas of awareness raising, environmental protection and lobbying, or the development of innovative solutions to reduce pollution are especially welcome to apply. European Commission — LIFE Environmental and Climate Action
The LIFE program is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The Environment sub-program makes grants for nature conservation projects in the areas of biodiversity, habitats, and species. The Climate action sub-program provides funding in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, farming, land use, and peatland management. The EU co-financing contribution for LIFE projects normally ranges from €275 thousand to €2.75 million. EU registered private entities, public bodies and NGOs are eligible to apply, including EU candidate countries and potential candidates. Monarch Butterfly Fund — Small Grants Program
The Monarch Butterfly Fund supports activities to protect the oyamel fir forests in which monarch butterflies overwinter in central Mexico. Most grants are awarded to Mexican organizations and individuals. Additionally, the Fund supports a small number of projects in the USA and Canada. Projects should work with habitat restoration, research, monitoring, education, and support for sustainable community development in and near monarch habitats. Most grants are a maximum of US$2,500. German Government — International Climate Initiative Southeast Asia
Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects on climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable energy, and biodiversity projects with climate relevance in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The programs should have a funding volume between €8 million and €20 million (depending on thematic focus area and country of implementation).
