U.S. Department of State — Support for Environmental Cooperation

The U.S. Department of State announces funding for logistics, meetings coordination, and digital communications to support environmental cooperation between all the U.S. Free Trade Agreement countries. Funding of up to US$197 thousand will be awarded to be used for logistics and meeting coordination support for in-person and virtual meetings, as well as digital communications to promote environmental cooperation programs. Eligibility is limited to U.S. and foreign non-profit organizations and academic institutions, as well as public international organizations. The closing date for applications is 31 July 2020. ENI CBC Med — Call for Capitalization Projects

The Mediterranean Sea Basin Program is a cross-border cooperation initiative implemented by the EU and neighboring coastal territories. The ENI CBC Med finances cooperation projects with focus on biodiversity conservation, climate change, and pollution for a more sustainable Mediterranean area. ENI CBC Med accepts applications for capitalization projects in the following priority areas: Water Management, Waste Treatment and Recycling, Renewable Energy, Integrated Coastal Zone Management. The maximum EU contribution is 90% of the total eligible costs with a total maximum of €1 million per project. The deadline for the submission of project proposals is 28 July 2020. Click here

European Commission — Global and Environmental Health

The European Commission (EC) aims to strengthen and stimulate the dialogue between civil society organizations in the EU and the ASEAN region in areas of global health, environment challenges, sustainable growth, and fundamental rights. The EC provides financial assistance to local projects and think tanks that mitigate the negative impacts on public health (air, water and soil pollution), research zoonotic diseases, and rethink urban living spaces, among other priorities detailed in the call for proposals. Applicants may request up to €300 thousand per project. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations and academic institutions established in the European Union, Indonesia, Thailand, New Zealand or the ASEAN region. Global Environment Facility — Community-based Projects in Malaysia

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme in Malaysia seeks concept notes for community-based projects in biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, prevention of land degradation, and reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants. Eligibility extends to community-based non-profit organizations, NGOs, and other grassroots organizations. The average grant size is US$25 thousand. StartupXs — COVID-19 Response Fund

StartupXs launches the COVID-19 Response Fund for start-ups and social enterprises with the aim to support early-stage social entrepreneurs to adapt to the pandemic. Support extends to social entrepreneurs whose projects focus on natural resources as well as other categories of the Terra Viva Grants Directory. Participation is open to any start-up or social enterprise worldwide. Priority is given to early-stage start-ups launching innovative products or ideas. One winner will receive US$1000. Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association — Innovation for Sustainability Grant

WIOMSA seeks innovative projects (demonstration and pilot projects) that address modern-day marine sustainability challenges to bridge the gap between marine research and innovation. The goal of the Innovation for Sustainability Grant program is to support the development and testing of concepts and new approaches that address and enhance the understanding of marine and coastal environmental issues. The proposals should be submitted by an institution or a consortium (government departments, research and academic institutions, NGOs, CBOs, or private companies). ASSEMBLE Plus — Access to Marine Research Facilities

ASSEMBLE Plus provides access to marine biological research institutions across Europe and overseas to carry out scientific research in the field of marine biological sciences. Scientists from academia, industry and policy can apply for funding to use these facilities to carry out research projects. ASSEMBLE Plus sponsors teams of up to two researchers. The program covers travel (one round trip per person), meals, accommodation, and shipping costs of project materials. Eligibility extends to candidates who work in a recognized academic institution, or are employed by a not-for-profit organisation or company based in a European Union Member State or Associated Country. ​Applications can be submitted until 04 October 2020. West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use — Master’s Program Climate Change & Marine Sciences

With funding provided by Germany, WASCAL engages in research to help tackle the severe challenges posed by climate change, focusing on West Africa. The WASCAL Graduate Studies Program offers full scholarships to support four master’s and six doctoral programs implemented at ten universities in West African countries. WASCAL’s member countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo. Doctoral students may spend up to six months at a host institution in Germany. Graduate students have access to the WASCAL research facilities located in various watersheds of West Africa. National Geographic Society — Equity and the Natural World

The National Geographic Society (NatGeo) seeks projects that will document underrepresented communities that have traditionally been given less consideration in stories of the environmental movement. Proposals may focus on all aspects of local and traditional communities, e.g., land use issues; indigenous heroes; impacts of environmental degradation; climate-related migration, etc. Applicants must have strong track records as storytellers (journalists, photographers, videographers, cartographers). National Geographic Society — Early-Career Grant

The National Geographic Society accepts applications from less experienced individuals who seek to lead a project. Applicants are not required to have an advanced degree and should submit their proposal at least four months before the project start date. Grants are typically funded for less than US $5 thousand but requests for up to US $10 thousand will also be considered. The next application deadline is October 2020. Find out more
