Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association

Grants for research and capacity building in marine and coastal science in countries that form the western coast of the Indian Ocean

Principal Office: International

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) promotes the development of marine and coastal science in the region of the Western Indian Ocean. WIOMSA makes grants for research and capacity building.

WIOMSA serves seven countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to the French department of Reunion. Membership in WIOMSA includes government institutions, national and regional NGOs, and research and academic institutes.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Research Grants. WIOMSA promotes research in marine science through two programs.

  • The Marine Science for Management (MASMA) offers competitive grants to support research in the region, and to promote professional capacity. MASMA encourages and supports multi/trans-disciplinary research; regional research collaboration; partnerships between scientists from within and outside the region; and professionalism and competence of researchers in designing and coordinating research projects.
  • The Marine Research Grant (MARG) strengthens capacity to conduct research and to increase understanding on various aspects of marine sciences. It offer grants for research in the applicant’s home country; research outside of the applicant’s home country; and travel to participate in regional and international fora.

About the program

APPLICATION: WIOMSA publishes a webpage for proposal submissions to MASMA and MARG. Applicants fill out an online application to present their biodata, educational and professional qualifications, and statements of support by employers and host organizations.

Marine Mammal Commission

Grants for conservation and research of marine mammals

Principal Office: USA

The Marine Mammal Commission (MMC) provides oversight of conservation policies and programs carried out by agencies of the U.S. Government that affect marine mammals. The MMC devotes special attention to species and populations of marine mammals that are vulnerable to human-related activities, impacts, and contaminants. In addition, the Commission engages with other species and populations of marine mammals whenever conservation challenges arise that may affect them.

The MMC’s scope is international to include policies and arrangements that protect and conserve marine mammals under international laws and conventions, and that define conservation actions with respect to international marine ecosystems.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Conservation and research of marine mammals. The MMC funds research that supports conservation of marine mammals at extreme risk. The program supports basic and applied research and conservation, and it also makes grants for outreach activities (i.e., conferences, workshops, symposia, education, outreach, and publication development).

Most grants are to principal investigators at universities, research institutes, conservation NGOs, professional societies, government agencies, and international organizations. There are no nationality criteria.
