Marine Mammal Commission

Grants for conservation and research of marine mammals

Principal Office: USA

The Marine Mammal Commission (MMC) provides oversight of conservation policies and programs carried out by agencies of the U.S. Government that affect marine mammals. The MMC devotes special attention to species and populations of marine mammals that are vulnerable to human-related activities, impacts, and contaminants. In addition, the Commission engages with other species and populations of marine mammals whenever conservation challenges arise that may affect them.

The MMC’s scope is international to include policies and arrangements that protect and conserve marine mammals under international laws and conventions, and that define conservation actions with respect to international marine ecosystems.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Conservation and research of marine mammals. The MMC funds research that supports conservation of marine mammals at extreme risk. The program supports basic and applied research and conservation, and it also makes grants for outreach activities (i.e., conferences, workshops, symposia, education, outreach, and publication development).

Most grants are to principal investigators at universities, research institutes, conservation NGOs, professional societies, government agencies, and international organizations. There are no nationality criteria.

About the research program

APPLICATION: The MMC awards grants based on an annual call for proposals, which may include specific research topics in any given year.

The MMC describes its grant making criteria; provides instructions to applicants; and identifies when and how to submit proposals.
