Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association — Workshop: Nanotechnology

Nanotech Futuristic Solutions and WIOMSA announce a workshop on Nanotechnology and Its Applications for Sustainable Cities and Coasts, that will take place in Johannesburg South Africa (November/December 2021). The workshop will equip professionals and practitioners with fundamental tools of nanoscience and will make them better prepared in implementing nanotechnology in marine science, city planning, science policy advocacy and renewable energy systems. The training is open to participants from Western Africa and the adjacent island states. All fees, including training, travel and accommodation will be covered. Embassy of Japan — Grassroots Human Security Projects in Botswana

The Embassy of Japan in Botswana invites applications for grant assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects. The fund is directed to relatively small socio-economic development projects which have a direct and immediate impact on the well-being of disadvantaged communities. The main areas are education, health/sanitation, water/energy, agriculture/indigenous industry, and environment. Eligibility extends to non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, educational institutes, medical institutes, and local governments. Grant size is up to ¥ 10 million per project. United States Agency for International Development — Economic Recovery through Sustainable Development

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Mali accepts the submission of concept papers focused on catalyzing private sector investment for Mali’s economic recovery through inclusive and sustainable development. Concept papers should focus on inclusive and sustainable agriculture-led growth. Funding for individual applications is anticipated to be in the range of US$250 thousand to US$1,5 million to be provided over a period of 2-5 years. The call is open to private sector entities from any country, although Malian private sector entities are of particular interest. Tzedek — Grassroots Projects in Africa and South Asia

Tzedek is a Jewish charitable organization aiming to reduce extreme poverty, focusing on grassroots projects in Africa and Asia. Tzedek supports local NGOs with the aim to develop partnerships to secure livelihoods of the poorest and most disadvantaged. The Overseas Project Team (OPT) operates Tzedek’s Partnership Project Grants scheme. Projects funded in the past include vocational training, micro-credit, livelihood startups, livestock, agriculture and more. The OPT meets 4-6 times a year. CIVICUS — Civil Society Activism

The CIVICUS Nelson Mandela-Graça Machel Innovation Awards shed a light on the importance of people power and civil society activism in creating a more just, inclusive and sustainable world. The Awards will recognize seven individuals, groups or organizations that stand out for their innovative work building people power in support of human rights and social justice for everyone. Each winning initiative will receive a US$5 thousand prize. The Awards are open to any individual, organization or group in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Pacific. U.S. African Development Foundation — Mandela Washington Fellows Program

The Mandela Washington Fellows Program provides up to US$25 thousand in funding to African-owned, sustainable social ventures. Venture must be based in and operate in Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants have to demonstrate how the venture will improve and change the communities in which the grants are implemented. Applications are open until 21 September 2021. More info here

Young Water Solutions — Young Water Fellowship Program: Senegal

Young Water Solutions supports young entrepreneurs to launch their water and sanitation related social businesses. The Young Water Fellowship provides training, seed-funding and mentorship. The bootcamp aims to empower its participants to implement projects addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), water pollution, and water scarcity. After the bootcamps Fellows can apply for a funding of up to €5 thousand to pilot their business models over 6 months. To be eligible, applicants must be 18 to 30 years old, be fluent in French, intend to stay in Senegal for at least 1.5 years after the training and spend at least 15 hours per week to work on their social business. Ban Ki-Moon Centre — Young Women Leadership on Climate Adaptation

The Young Women Leadership on Climate Adaptation program is a virtual educational and capacity-building event that fosters the leadership of African young women to induce and realize sustainable solutions that build resilience to the changing climate. The part-time training program will spread over 20-weeks between October 2021 to March 2022. The program aims to help participants to develop an advanced skills set for effective leadership and gain the knowledge to effectively communicate about climate adaptation. Participants must be women between the ages 20-35 and nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria or Zimbabwe. International Support Network for African Development — Environmental Education Program

The International Support Network for African Development (ISNAD-Africa) seeks to implement the Environmental Education Program (EEP) to identify environmental challenges in Africa and motivate youth to develop solutions to the identified problems and needs through critical thinking and the application of previously acquired knowledge from subjects in secondary school. The program seeks to provide youth with action competencies that will enable them to develop capacity and long-term commitment to sustainability for everyday life, career engagement or voluntary service as environmentalists or influencers. Each secondary school will be represented by a team of at least five (5) students and a coordinating teacher. ISNAD-Africa will provide technical support, monthly/quarterly meetings, as well as share possible opportunities with the clubs. United States Agency for International Development — Resilience of Community Conservancies Kenya

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks concept papers from qualified entities to implement the Scaling Sustainability and Resilience of Community Conservancies and Coastal Ecosystems of Kenya program. The goal of this activity is to improve the resilience of vulnerable populations and environments by increasing the capability of local communities to mitigate against recurrent environmental, economic, socio and political risks. USAID intends to provide US$9.8 million to prevent the loss of biodiversity, up to US$2.5 million for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and US$2 million for Feed the Future activities.
