The National Geographic Society seeks proposals for its program “Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution” from all around the world. The aim is to explore solutions to reduce marine plastic pollution (including behavior change). Projects may be focused around conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Preference will be given to applicants who are residents or citizens of the country of fieldwork as well as to projects with strong local capacity development components. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides financial assistance to strategic projects that conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats though combating the trafficking of marine turtles in East and Southeast Asia. Projects under this call should address the trafficking of hawksbill turtles in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China. Applicants may request up to US$500 thousand in project funding. Eligibility extends to governments, businesses, non-profit organizations, universities and individuals. The Smithsonian’s Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network invites proposals for postdoctoral fellowships that will advance the goals of the Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO). MarineGEO focuses on global-scale, long-term study of coastal biodiversity and ecosystems. Current sites in the network are located in the USA, Belize, and Panama. The maximum award is US$65 thousand per year. Postdoctoral scientists must collaborate directly with two or more Smithsonian scientists as named sponsors. The NAM S&T Centre invites applications from scientists from the developing countries for the Joint NAM S&T Centre – ZMT Bremen (Germany) Fellowship in Tropical Coastal Marine Research. Under this scheme, five selected scientists will work with senior researchers and faculty members in fields related to Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Geology, and Tropical Coastal Marine Systems; and undertaking short-term joint research projects for a period of up to 3 months. The U.S. Department of State seeks proposals for projects that use environmentally sustainable waste management and/or reduce the amount of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear. Four grants of up to US$246,875 each will be awarded for work that will support efforts that help prevent marine litter from entering the ocean. UN Environment in collaboration with Think Beyond Plastic invites university students from all over the globe to take part in the 2017 Marine Plastic Innovation Challenge. The challenge seeks solution-oriented engineering, research and communication projects that can help solve the global marine litter problem. The innovation challenge is organized around four themes: (1) Design and Engineering, (2) Communication, (3) Prediction and Recovery, and (4) Economics. The winners will be invited to the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference in San Diego, USA, on 12 – 16 March 2018 and receive professional mentoring. The Center for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Center) will fund up to five fellowships for researchers from developing countries to work with senior researchers and faculty members at the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Germany. The EC announces funding to enhance the protection and sustainable development of maritime resources in Lebanon. More specifically, activities should address how to recover the country’s affected marine ecosystems and to develop marine and coastal biodiversity. Eligibility for grants extends to NGOs and universities in Lebanon, member states of the EU, and partner countries and territories covered by the European Neighborhood Instrument — in addition to qualifying international organizations.
