The British Council supports research workshops under the programs Researcher Links and the Newton Fund to assist early-career researchers from the UK and partner countries to interact and explore research collaborations. Current opportunities that have one or more environmental themes include: (1) communications technologies for disaster management, UK and Turkey, with application deadline on 26 May 2017; (2) recent advances in energy conservation for buildings in the UK and China, with application deadline on 31 May 2017; (3) detection and prevention of biological invasions, UK and China, with application deadline on 31 May 2017; (4) off-shore wind and wave energy, UK and Turkey, with application deadline on 30 June 2017; and (4) green port development, UK and China, with application deadline on 15 July 2017. European Commission — LEAP-Agri Food and Agriculture in Africa
The LEAP-Agri partnership is a program of EU-Africa research and innovation to support projects in food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture. This call invites consortia composed of at least four partners from four participating countries (two African and two European) to submit project proposals addressing the defined topics. The African partner countries are Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda. Projects can apply for a total budget between €300 thousand and €1.5 million. The budget for each country or organization is mentioned in the individual eligibility criteria and funding regulations for that particular institute or country. IRDR Young Scientists Programme — Call for Application, 2nd Batch
The IRDR Young Scientists Programme invites young researchers worldwide to join its professional network of professionals and practitioners. Eligibility extends to candidates affiliated with an academic program (either master or doctorate) as a student or as a young faculty, and working on research related to disaster risk reduction and its link to broader issues of environment and development. Applicants should be less than age 40 on the date of application. There is no cash grant, but IRDR Young Scientists are offered opportunities for networking and training. UNESCO — Juan Bosch Prize for Social Science Research in Latin America and the Caribbean
The United Nations Educational, Social, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) invites applications for the 2017 Juan Bosch Prize. The Prize aims to reward the best social science thesis of young researchers who are making significant research contributions to social development policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Past awards have included thesis topics on policies for natural resources, among others. The amount of the prize is US$10 thousand. The closing date for nominations (English, Spanish) is 30 May 2017. UK Natural Environment Research Council — International Opportunities Fund 2017
NERC’s International Opportunities Fund announces grants that help UK researchers develop and strengthen collaborative links with international partners. Pump Priming grants are a maximum of £40 thousand for up to two years. Pump Priming Plus grants are a maximum of £250 thousand for up to three years. Indian Council of Agricultural Research — Doctoral Fellowships in Agriculture 2017-2018
ICAR announces thirty Netaji Subhas-ICAR international fellowships for doctoral degrees in agriculture and allied sciences at agricultural universities and institutions in India and abroad. Biodiversity Foundation — Grants for Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development
Spain’s Biodiversity Foundation funds conservation field projects, research, education and training, and public awareness. Most grants are made in Spain. However, the Foundation is willing to consider international projects proposed by Spanish nonprofit NGOs; by large international nonprofit NGOs; by nonprofit organizations in other EU member states; and projects co-funded by AECID (Spain’s agency for international development cooperation). Grants are up to €50 thousand for one year. The closing date for the main program of competitive grants is 30 June 2017. Link
John Ball Zoological Society — Wildlife Conservation 2017
The John Ball Zoological Society makes grants to conserve wild animals and their habitats; to improve the management of captive animals; and to develop education programs related to these objectives. Most funded projects are in developing countries. The principal investigator can be of any nationality and must be associated with a recognized institution (accredited zoo, academic institution, conservation or non-profit organization). The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI Association) makes cash grants of US$ 2,500 to support national or sub-national activities in developing countries for capacity building related to environment and sustainable development. Grants can be used to foster partnerships, develop in-country technical capacity, improve data compatibility and access, and increase political support for spatial data infrastructure.
