U.S. Agency for International Development — Sustainable Fisheries in the Philippines

USAID/Manila announces a 5-year program called “Fish Right” to enhance the sustainable use and resilience of coastal and marine resources that provide food, livelihoods, and coastal protection to communities in the Philippines. Fish Right will focus on marine key biodiversity areas, with special attention on “wild” or capture fisheries and the communities that depend on them. Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs in the USA and Philippines; for-profit NGOs willing to forego their fees; private voluntary organizations; universities; foundations; consortiums; and international organizations. Pacsafe Turtle Fund — Grants for Sea Turtle Conservation 2018

The Pacsafe Turtle Fund supports the worldwide conservation of endangered sea turtles such as the leatherback, loggerhead, green, and hawksbill turtles. United Nations Environment Program — Fighting Plastic in the Oceans

UN Environment and Think Beyond Plastic are sponsoring a worldwide innovation challenge for university students to fight the increasing problem of plastic in oceans. The winners in each of four categories of the competition will attend the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference in California (March 2018), and will receive free mentorship to help them develop their ideas. European Commission — Mediterranean Cross-Border Cooperation

The EC announces the first call for proposals of the ENI CBC “Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2014-2020″. The program aims to promote business and entrepreneurship (including in agriculture), and to promote coordination of efforts for environmental protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation. Project partnerships should be composed of a minimum of three eligible countries, including at least one EU Mediterranean Country and one Mediterranean Partner Country. Partner countries are Jordan, Palestinian Territories, and Tunisia (and others expected to be announced soon). The closing date for project submissions is 09 November 2017. Find more information

International Coral Reef Initiative & UN Environment — Grants for Management of Coral Reefs 2017

The ICRI and UN Environmental Grants Programme invite concept notes for projects on sustainable management of coral reefs. Grants up to US$60 thousand will be awarded to projects aimed at contributing to the implementation of the ICRI plan of action and at protecting and preserving coral reefs and/or related ecosystems. The particular emphasis is building climate resilience and facilitating coral recovery. Grants are available to governments, NGOs, and community groups for projects implemented in developing countries, least-developed countries, and small-island developing states. Millennium Campus Network — Millennium Oceans Prize

The Millennium Oceans Prize encourages activism, social entrepreneurship, and research to champion advocacy and leadership for the oceans, freshwater systems, sustainable fishing, and marine conservation. Initiatives in sustainable fisheries will receive special consideration. Applicants for the Prize are college or undergraduate university students, ages 18 to 30, anywhere in the world. The winning competitor will be offered up to US$5 thousand to implement his/her campaign and an invitation to the Millennium Campus Conference in Morocco, November 2017. European Commission — Support for Fisheries in Albania

The EC announces funding to assist Albania to develop the capacity of its fishery administration to design, implement, enforce, and monitor the relevant policy measures and regulations.  Besides support to the fishery administration, the action includes the design and implementation of an investment grant scheme to the fishing fleet to improve its efficiency.  Eligibility for funding extends to government departments and other public bodies in EU member countries related to fishing. African Union Commission — Earth Observation Data for Sustainable Development

The African Union Commission (AUC), in partnership with the European Union, will make grants to expand the practical use of Earth Observation (EO) data and services for policymakers, scientists, businesses, and the public across Africa. Grants will be awarded in two categories: (i) water and natural resources; and (ii) marine and coastal areas services. The grants will be allocated across five African sub-regions. Eligibility for grants extends to consortia of African national or regional organizations, research institutions, and universities that have at least five years of experience in implementing large-scale EO projects in subjects that include water and natural resources, and/or marine and coastal zones. Applying institutions should have a regional, continental, or global mandate. Grants will range from €1 million to €2 million. Applicants will be required to provide co-financing up to 20%. Center for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries — Tropical Coastal Marine Research

The Center for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Center) will fund up to five fellowships for researchers from developing countries to work with senior researchers and faculty members at the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Germany. Fellowships are for up to three months. Travel costs are covered by the NAM S&T Center; ZMT offers fellows a monthly subsistence allowance. The closing date for applications is 07 July 2017. Link

U.S. Department of State — Environmental Funding for Pacific Islands

The U.S. Department of State announces environmental awards up to US$25 thousand to support local and regional small-scale environmental projects in eligible countries of the Pacific Islands region. Subject areas are agriculture and fisheries; sustainable economic development; adaptation to changing environmental conditions, e.g., coastal management; waste management, including marine litter; air quality; biodiversity and healthy ecosystems; marine protected areas; environment or health-related education; capacity building for scientific research on environmental issues; and deployment of new technology for application to environmental issues. Projects may propose activities in Fiji; Kiribati; Marshall Islands; Micronesia; Nauru; Palau; Samoa; Solomon Islands; Tonga; Tuvalu; or Vanuatu.
