National Geographic Society — Big Cats Conservation
The National Geographic Big Cats Initiative seeks projects benefiting big cat populations and their habitats via field-based and action-oriented programs in Africa. The current RFP focusses on lion populations in specific African regions (detailed in the call). Although priority will be given to projects focused on lions, projects on leopard and cheetah populations will also be considered. Applicants may request up to $100 thousand. National Geographic Society — Species Recovery
The National Geographic Society seeks proposals that “stimulate, promote and support conservation actions for halting biodiversity decline, preventing species’ extinctions, and restoring and conserving intact habitats and ecosystems, both on the ground and in the water”. In partnership with the IUCN SSC, the goal is to halt further biodiversity decline by implementing species conservation plans. Funds are not restricted by taxon or region, but proposals must include principal investigators or participants resident in the country where the fieldwork will be conducted. National Geographic Society — Early-Career Grant
The National Geographic Society accepts applications from less experienced individuals who seek to lead a project. Applicants are not required to have an advanced degree and should submit their proposal at least four months before the project start date. Grants are typically funded for less than US $5 thousand but requests for up to US $10 thousand will also be considered. The next application deadline is October 2020. Find out more
U.S. Agency for International Development — Development of Food Security Activities in Ethiopia
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications for funding for the development of food security activities in Ethiopia. USAID plans to award up to four cooperative agreements with the goal to improve food security of vulnerable households in targeted communities, contributing to a sustained reduction in rural poverty. The anticipated funding for all awarded multi-year activities is US$550 million over a five-year period. U.S. and foreign NGOs, as well as public international organizations are eligible to apply. U.S. Department of State — Air Quality Management in Southeast Asia
The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, U.S. State Department, announces the “Building Air Quality Management Capacity in Southeast Asia” program. The project targets government entities with the intend to strengthen regulatory and monitoring capacity of government actors and expand awareness of air quality issues in Southeast Asian countries. The program intends to provide US$296,296 in funding to be used for the production of educational materials, expert workshops, and the development of a monitoring and evaluation plan to be used by key agencies. Countries eligible for funding under this award include: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Beyond Plastic Med — Reduce Plastic Pollution in the Mediterranean Islands
Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) launches a call for projects to reduce plastic pollution in the Mediterranean islands. BeMed’s contribution is €100 thousand per project (up to 70% of the total project value). Project duration should not exceed 24 months. The call is open all the countries around the Mediterranean. Proposed projects must target a Mediterranean island (or a set of islands). Organizations developing activities in the areas of awareness raising, environmental protection and lobbying, or the development of innovative solutions to reduce pollution are especially welcome to apply. European Commission — LIFE Environmental and Climate Action
The LIFE program is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The Environment sub-program makes grants for nature conservation projects in the areas of biodiversity, habitats, and species. The Climate action sub-program provides funding in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, farming, land use, and peatland management. The EU co-financing contribution for LIFE projects normally ranges from €275 thousand to €2.75 million. EU registered private entities, public bodies and NGOs are eligible to apply, including EU candidate countries and potential candidates. Monarch Butterfly Fund — Small Grants Program
The Monarch Butterfly Fund supports activities to protect the oyamel fir forests in which monarch butterflies overwinter in central Mexico. Most grants are awarded to Mexican organizations and individuals. Additionally, the Fund supports a small number of projects in the USA and Canada. Projects should work with habitat restoration, research, monitoring, education, and support for sustainable community development in and near monarch habitats. Most grants are a maximum of US$2,500. German Government — International Climate Initiative Southeast Asia
Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects on climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable energy, and biodiversity projects with climate relevance in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The programs should have a funding volume between €8 million and €20 million (depending on thematic focus area and country of implementation).
