The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat accepts applications in support of evidence-based and results-oriented policy dialogues. Applicants are invited to submit research proposals that strengthen evidence-based result-oriented discussions about climate change and other subjects of interest. Selected projects will receive funding of between US$60 thousand and US$80 thousand each. Eligibility is restricted to non-profit organizations. Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) makes small grants for the technical assessment of protected conservation areas. Small Technical Grants for Assessment (STGA) aim to identify result-oriented priority actions for improved protected and conserved areas management and governance. The maximum amount is €20 thousand per assessment. Assessments must take place in priority areas such as key landscapes for conservation, key biodiversity areas, marine managed areas or other protected and conserved areas in Africa, the Caribbean and the Asia-Pacific region. German Academic Exchange Service — Climate Research Fellowship
ClimapAfrica supports research on climate change and possible solutions. African PhD students are invited to submit postdoctoral climate research projects to one of the following research areas: Agriculture, Climate Science, Veterinary Medicine, Biodiversity, Food Security, Marine Science, Energy, Water Resources, and Forest Sustainability, among others. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards fellowships of max. €10 thousand, plus a monthly allowance to cover research costs for a period of 12 to 18 months. Fellows can apply for additional funding to cover a temporary research stay in Germany (2-6 months) to work on a specific research question. The application deadline is 15 February 2021. U.S. Mission to Guinea — Small Grants for Community Development
The U.S. Embassy in Conakry provides small grants to registered self-help groups and community-based organizations in Guinea. Grants are made in support of projects that improve living conditions in local communities, including but not limited to water-related projects or income generating activities such as agriculture and fisheries. Awards range from US$5 thousand to US$15 thousand. Eligibility extends to not-for-profit organizations, including village associations, women’s groups and civil society organizations. Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism — Africa Water Reporting Grant
The Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) supports two water-related stories on WASH, access to drinking water, health facilities and schools, handwashing, and many more. The grant of US$2,100 should be used to cover all the costs related to the story, including fees for team members, travel, and any other related costs. Journalists from Sub-Saharan Africa are invited to submit story pitches and provide professional references. The closing date to submit a story pitch is 18 December 2020. German Academic Exchange Service — Doctoral Scholarships for Africans
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers two doctoral scholarships at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT). The scholarships are related to the interdisciplinary research topic “Adaptation of marine socio-ecological systems to changing environments.” The scholarships will be granted for up to 4 years. Applicants need to originate from Sub-Saharan Africa and hold a university degree. The scholarship includes a monthly allowance of €1,200, plus additional travel and research allowances. U.S. Department of State — Wildlife Trafficking in Sub-Saharan Africa
The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), supports activities that counter wildlife trafficking and illegal logging in Sub-Saharan Africa. The overall goal is to reduce the ability of criminal groups to profit from poaching and trafficking of protected animals, as well as protected timber and plants, originating from Africa. Applicants may request up to US$1.5 million for the implementation of anti-wildlife crime related activities. African Women in Agricultural Research and Development — One Planet Fellowship
African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) invites applications for the One Planet Fellowship. The Fellowship seeks to build a network of African and European scientist leaders to help Africa’s smallholder farmers adapt to climate change. Applicants from the following Sub-Saharan African countries are eligible to apply: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Zambia. Selected candidates will participate in intensive training workshops aimed at fostering leadership skills, strengthening scientific research skills including integrating gender into their research. French Development Agency — Reporting on Sustainable Development in African Languages
The French Development Agency (AFD) offers to support 48 media agencies from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Afri’Kibaaru project will support the production and dissemination of information related to sustainable development in several local languages. The project will be implemented in the following six countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, and Senegal. The objective is that the multi-lingual media content allows populations to better understand important issues related to climate change, health, education, equality, and more. AFD seeks to support radio, TV, and online media as well as experienced editorial staff and journalists. Fluency in French is required. The application deadline is 10 December 2020. Link
U.S. Agency for International Development — Youth Development & Economic Growth in Zimbabwe
USAID/Zimbabwe seeks applications from qualified youth-focused local entities to provide program design support services and co-design the youth-led Local Works Zimbabwe Youth Program. The grant recipient will be responsible for setting up, coordinating and managing day-to-day operations and implementation of the Local Works Collaborative Action Network for youth development in Zimbabwe.
