Instrumentl is a team of former nonprofit development staff, scientists, and software engineers who share the aim of helping researchers to find and apply for grants. The focus is researchers within the ecological and environmental sciences. Instrumental has compiled a list of research grants that have application deadlines during the next few months, April-October 2017. The geographical scope and eligibility requirements vary with each grant program, including several that support research in the developing world. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok invites proposals from organizations interested in organizing a conference that examines current marine environmental issues in the seas of Southeast Asia. Proposals should encourage think tanks and academia to engage in a comprehensive conversation examining and analyzing international issues related to environmental challenges in the seas of Southeast Asia. The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), in partnership with collaborating institutions in Tanzania, announces the 10th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium to be held in Dar es Salaam in October-November 2017. Abstracts are invited on any topic related to the coastal and marine environment of the West Indian Ocean. WIOMSA will provide a limited number of travel grants to regional participants whose abstracts have been accepted, with priority for students. The deadline to submit abstracts is 28 April 2017. The U.S. Department of State will fund projects in marine protected areas and reduced nutrient pollution affecting coastal waters. Grants in Category 1 will strengthen compliance capacity for marine protected areas in the Bahamas, Belize, Honduras, and Panama. Grants in Category 2 will fund projects to more effectively manage marine protected areas in Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania. Grants in Category 3 will aim to reduce nutrient pollution in waterways, coastal waters, and the ocean. The Pacific Community (SPC) launches a photo contest. Submissions must illustrate climate change, marine environments, fisheries, and/or aquaculture in the Pacific Islands region. The United Nations Development Program aims to foster the development of the blue economy in ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. The ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge seeks to identify, finance, and support innovative solutions geared towards the conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems, coastal areas, and freshwater resources. The Prince Albert II Foundation is dedicated to the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development on a global scale. Currently, the Foundation calls for projects in 4 thematic areas: forest conservation through local and indigenous action; strengthening arctic and antarctic marine protected areas; coastal and marine solutions; and other projects that relate to climate change, biodiversity, or water preservation. The Save Our Seas Foundation funds and supports marine and ocean research, conservation, and education projects worldwide. Projects have to focus on charismatic threatened wildlife and their habitats, with a particular concern for marine chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays, skates, sawfishes, and chimaeras). The Earth Observation Sustainable Blue Economy project aims to develop new products, indicators, and tools to support local Blue Economic activities and monitor their impact on the marine environment. Four contracts will be implemented, each targeting one among four possible themes: Aquaculture, Fisheries, Marine Renewable Energy, Leisure, and Tourism. The activity shall be implemented in close collaboration with Early Adopters such as permitting and regulating authorities, financial investors, and the Blue Economy sector operators.
