USAID seeks to improve human wellbeing and reduce the threats to biodiversity by improving agriculture and fishing practices in coastal and marine environments of Haiti. USAID will provide funding for projects that reduce the underlying threats to coastal and marine resources; enhance the resilience of coastal communities; conserve flora and fauna in select marine protected areas by strengthening governance structures that have the ability to adaptively manage protected areas; and ensure long-term conservation by implementing sustainable natural resource management strategies. The estimated total project funding is US$500 thousand. Eligibility is restricted to non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education based in Haiti. The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) invites nominations for the WIOMSA Emerging Scientist Award. The award recognizes significant achievements and outstanding contributions made by emerging scientists for research in coastal and marine sciences. WIOMSA seeks innovative projects (demonstration and pilot projects) that address modern-day marine sustainability challenges to bridge the gap between marine research and innovation. The goal of the Innovation for Sustainability Grant program is to support the development and testing of concepts and new approaches that address and enhance the understanding of marine and coastal environmental issues. The proposals should be submitted by an institution or a consortium (government departments, research and academic institutions, NGOs, CBOs, or private companies). ASSEMBLE Plus provides access to marine biological research institutions across Europe and overseas to carry out scientific research in the field of marine biological sciences. Scientists from academia, industry and policy can apply for funding to use these facilities to carry out research projects. ASSEMBLE Plus sponsors teams of up to two researchers. The program covers travel (one round trip per person), meals, accommodation, and shipping costs of project materials. Eligibility extends to candidates who work in a recognized academic institution, or are employed by a not-for-profit organisation or company based in a European Union Member State or Associated Country. The WASCAL Graduate Studies Program offers full scholarships to support four master’s and six doctoral programs implemented at ten universities in West African countries. WASCAL’s member countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo. The Technical University of Atlantic (Cabo Verde) seeks applications for its Master’s Program on Climate Change and Marine Sciences (MP-CCMS). The West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) offers scholarships to African MSc students. The program includes English language training for participants from Francophone countries, three semesters of joint Master’s courses, shipboard training, and a scientific trip to a German partner institution. The European Marine Biological Research Centre (EMBRC) offers grants for services to 10 EuroMarine early-career scientists (PhD students or researchers within 5 years of their PhD degree). Applicants must belong to an organization that is a member of EuroMarine. Each successful applicant will receive a grant of €5 thousand to cover the cost of EMBRC services. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) seeks journalists to attend a three-day marine science workshop in the Maldives (24-26 June 2020). This opportunity is open to journalists from specific countries around the Indian Ocean to gain a better understanding of marine issues and how to report on them. The workshop will be held in English, therefore, participants must be able to understand and communicate in English. EJN will pay for travel, accommodation and meals of selected participants. UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) invite proposals for collaborative research projects to understand the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Applicants may request up to S$1.25 million from NRF and up to £700 thousand from NERC. Applications are sought from teams comprising researchers from Singapore, the UK and low- and middle-income countries in Southeast Asia. The European Marine Board (EMB) seeks creative young ambassadors that are willing to play a role in advocating for EMB and promoting the role and relevance of marine science. EMB ambassadors will participate in various activities, including EMB Plenary meetings and external events or workshops. The Ambassador will receive a total grant of €2 thousand and a travel grant up to a total amount of €3 for meeting and events. Ambassadors should commit up to 120 hours per year for a period of 2 years. Any PhD or postdoc student with experience in marine-based research is welcome to apply.
