EuroMarine funds two Long-Term Scientific Working Groups with a maximum funding of €12,500 each. The aim of the working groups is to provide the EuroMarine community with recommendations on how to best contribute to the international and European initiatives for restoring and sustainably exploiting the oceans as well as to advance the research on emerging topics related to marine sciences. Proposals should involve at least three full Member Organizations of EuroMarine, from at least two different countries. The European Commission (EC) offers grants to prevent and minimize marine and freshwater pollution from chemical pollutants. Proposals should focus on demonstrating replicable solutions to prevent and minimize pollution in the Mediterranean Sea including its major river catchment areas. The maximum amount of financial support is €100 thousand per region. Applicants must be established in the Member States of the European Union or low- and middle-income countries. The Prince Albert II Foundation accepts applications to strengthen Arctic and Antarctic marine protected areas. The Foundation seeks to better understand climate-induced changes and how these changes affect the global social, economic and environmental systems and double the efforts to protect these fragile ecosystems. Project proposals must focus on the Arctic and Antarctic marine region. Any financial support requested should not exceed 50% of the total project budget. The U.S. National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) supports projects to assess, remove, and dispose of marine debris in and around coastal communities impacted by hurricanes and other episodic storm events. Eligible projects will reduce marine debris from coastal habitats and nearshore waters of coastal counties in the Gulf of Mexico impacted by hurricanes Ida, Laura, Delta and Sally. The Hurricane Response Marine Debris Removal Fund will primarily fund projects that are ready for direct clean-up efforts to remove and dispose of marine debris. Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, government agencies, for-profit organizations, and educational institutions. The Fund will award approximately US$3 million in grants. The Oak Foundation makes grants in several thematic areas, including Environment. Oak’s grants in the sub-theme of marine conservation focus on industrial fishing, small-scale fisheries, and plastics pollution. The Foundation also makes grants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in North America, Europe, and some emerging economies, e.g., Brazil, China, and India. The Foundation’s sub-theme on illegal wildlife trade aims to conserve populations of African elephants and rhinos by curbing their illegal hunting and trade. The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), and partners, offer a shipboard fellowship opportunity onboard the research vessel R/V Marion Dufresne during 2022 (29 June – 22 July). Ten early-career scientists and postgraduate students involved in oceanographic work at institutions in the Western Indian Ocean will be selected to participate in the Floating University project. The program is primarily open to postgraduate students (PhD or MSc) involved in oceanographic work, marine sciences, and maritime studies at institutions in Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Seychelles Somali, and Tanzania. Oceans & Lakes is an interuniversity master program that provides students with a strong fundamental and applied knowledge in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems. Through the Flemish Inter-University Council (VLIR-UOS), scholarships are provided for this 2-year master program in “Master of Science in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management” (Oceans & Lakes). For this specific scholarship, eligibility extends to nationals from the VLIR-UOS partner countries (please refer to the call for a complete list of eligible countries). MeerWissen Initiative seeks to support projects that contribute to strengthening marine biodiversity conservation in sustainable blue economy approaches in Africa. MeerWissen supports partnerships of at least one German and one African academic institution. It is, however, required that a German academic institution submits the application. Projects may request up to €360 thousand for a period of up to two years.
