The WUN Research Development Fund (RDF) provides grants of up to £10 thousand for one year to foster research collaborations among academic staff (faculty) at WUN member universities. Applications are open to researchers from WUN member institutions. The RDF supports research projects that fall under the network’s principal research theme of sustainable development. The closing date is 20 October 2023. (Note: Most WUN member universities have earlier internal submission deadlines, and prospective applicants should contact their local WUN Coordinator as soon as possible.) Link to guidelines

The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research supports doctoral students to collect specimens and data in disciplines relying heavily on field studies, e.g., including biology, ecology, geography, and others. Applicants from the USA may use the grants for research anywhere in the world. Applicants from other countries must be based at an institution in the USA, or carry out their work in the USA. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers reporting grants to journalists from Indigenous and ethnic minority groups to support the production of in-depth stories that will call attention to climate justice, biodiversity and other issues related to the rights and well-being of Indigenous peoples and communities. EJN plans to make 20-25 story grants of up to US$2000 each to selected journalists from the Asia-Pacific region. Applications are open to Indigenous and/or ethnic minority journalists working in any medium (online, print, television, radio) and other expert media practitioners Applications must be submitted by 03 July 2023. The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation awards commercialization support to African innovators developing scalable engineering solutions to local challenges. (Note: This may include one or more thematic areas covered by the Terra Viva Grants Directory). The winner will receive £25 thousand, three runners-up will be awarded £10 thousand each. The Dubai Municipality, in collaboration with UN Habitat, offers Best Practices Awards for outstanding contributions that demonstrate valuable contributions to sustainable urban development. The five award categories include one on urban food systems, and one on addressing climate change and reducing pollution. The competition is open to governments, nonprofits, companies, universities and individuals. Total award prizes sum up to US$1 million. Winners will be announced at the awarding ceremony of the 13th cycle in Dubai. The deadline to receive submissions is 31 August 2023. Link to the award

The Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation invites participants to apply for new short-term courses. Wageningen University & Research offers a wide range of online courses to support professionals. Courses have different deadlines and locations. Thematic areas include Climate Change, Water Management, Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, and many others. Most courses are open to professionals of government departments, NGOs and civil society organizations, businesses, development agencies, universities and colleges for higher education, and individual consultants. Sustainable Energy for All seeks youth-led sustainable cooling solutions that can improve affordability and increase access to sustainable cooling. Entries may be submitted by individuals or groups, all under 35 years of age. Three teams will receive a cash prize and further support from the competition sponsors. The Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s leading photography competitions, recognizes the best single images from across 10 diverse categories, including ‘Landscape’ and ‘Natural World & Wildlife’. SDG Academy, in partnership with edX, offers an online course on natural resources for sustainable development. In this 12-week course, participants will learn about efforts to sustainably manage extractive industry investments. Applicants who are sustainable development practitioners, such as those who work in corporate sustainability and responsibility or renewable energy, graduate students and climate change activists or are particularly encouraged to participate. Collaborate Pacific aims to support effective governance, leadership, regional cooperation, and sustainable development in the Pacific. The fund supports small-scale activities in thematic priority areas: Agriculture, Climate Change, Oceans and Fisheries, Renewable Energy, and many other development priorities. Funding can cover travel (including transport, accommodation, and meals) and event costs (including hosting costs). Pacific Island citizens, NGOs, government agencies, and civil society are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Find out more
