The Trust makes grants for education and research in ornamental horticulture, primarily in North America, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Australia. Projects may focus on research in ornamental horticulture, creation and maintenance of gardens accessible to the public for educational purposes, educational activities that further ornamental horticulture, and environmentally responsible cultivation of plants which have ornamental horticultural value. Applicants include botanical gardens, arboreta, universities, and other nonprofit charitable organizations. Grants are up to US$25 thousand. Heinrich Böll Foundation — University Studies in Germany 2025
The Heinrich Böll Foundation annually funds graduate and doctoral students across all subjects and nationalities for university studies in Germany. Preference is for applicants working in the subject areas of the Foundation such as climate and energy, resource governance, and ecology and green development (among others). The special focus regions for international students are Central and Eastern Europe; EU neighborhood countries and the CIS; the Middle East and North Africa; transition and newly industrialized countries; and conflict regions worldwide. Rotary Foundation — Masters Studies in Water and Sanitation
The Rotary Foundation partners with UNESCO to offer funding for master’s studies in water and sanitation. Applicants for Rotary’s support must be provisionally admitted to one of the three participating degree programs at UNESCO’s Institute for Water Education (IHE). Students apply via their local Rotary club or district. Each award is approximately €34 thousand, paid directly to UNESCO-IHE. BirdsCaribbean — Research and Conservation of Caribbean Birds
BirdsCaribbean invites applications for its grants programs. The James A. Kushlan Research and Conservation Fund provides support on an annual basis for biological, ecological, and conservation research on waterbirds in the Caribbean region. The Betty Petersen Conservation Fund seeks to advance the conservation status of birds and habitats in the Caribbean region through projects that engage and empower communities and stakeholders to protect and benefit sustainably from their birds. David S. Lee Fund for the Conservation of Caribbean Birds supports applied and innovative projects with direct conservation effects on Caribbean birds and/or their habitats. Awards range from US$2,500 to US$5,000. Grants will be awarded to anyone (individuals or organizations). Applicants from the Caribbean will be given consideration over other nationalities. The Fonseca Leadership Program aims to provide financial support for researchers and practitioners in Latin America to pursue graduate-level studies geared towards education and research training. Applicants may apply for up to two (master’s) and three (PhD) years of funding and request up to US$30 thousand per year. The fellowship is open to nationals of eligible countries within WWF-US and the GEF priority areas (Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Suriname). The Spirit of Innovation Challenge is a worldwide competition for youth ages 13-18 to create commercially viable products or services to address issues of global sustainability. Categories include “Energy and Environment”. Ideas are submitted by student teams, which can be international, if desired. There is a fee for team registration (discounted rates may apply for qualified title one schools or special circumstances). World Academy of Sciences — Fellowships for Research and Advanced Training
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) offers fellowships to young scientists in developing countries to enable them to spend three to 12 months at a research institution in a developing country other than their own. The purpose of these fellowships is to enhance the research capacity of promising scientists and to foster links for further collaboration. Costs are shared between TWAS and the host institutions. The fellowships are for research and advanced training. There is no age limit. Ramsar Convention – Wetland Conservation Awards 2024
The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention calls for nominations for the 9th edition of the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards. The awards recognize and honor the contributions of individuals, organizations, and governments around the world in promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands. Award recipients will each receive the Evian Special Prize of US$10 thousand provided by Danone. Individuals and organizations of any nation or region can be nominated. The Convention Secretariat organizes a training session for French-speaking journalists who cover the African continent on desertification and the role of the media in promoting sustainable land management practices. This training takes place from 2-6 September 2024, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The call is open to French-speaking journalists interested in environmental issues. African Development Bank — Climate Action
The African Development Fund (ADF) recognizes climate change as a major threat to Africa. The Fund has launched a call for proposals through its Climate Action Window (CAW) specifically seeking projects that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry, land use, and fisheries; improve water access and wastewater management; and accelerate a just energy transition. The CAW will also support projects that address nature-based solutions and aim to restore mangroves and wetlands. Funding requested for a single project or program may range between US$ 3 million to 5 million. Eligible beneficiaries are governments and government entities of ADF countries.
