Rare’s Center for Behavior & the Environment and partners seek existing solutions that are changing behaviors to help solve the world’s most challenging environmental problems. For this year’s contest, Solutions Search seeks proven behavior-change initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean that reduce the unsustainable/illegal wildlife trade. Contest entrants get access to capacity building, workshops, and networking opportunities to further refine and scale their solution. Two winners will win US$20 thousand. Climate Tracker — Story Grant on Plastics
Climate Tracker Asia accepts pitches for a new reporting initiative focused on plastic pollution and solutions to combat the problem. Climate Tracker seeks multimedia story proposals from journalists and communicators (including students) from the Asia Pacific region. Journalists will receive US$200 to produce their story. Kevin Richardson Foundation — Preserving African Wildlife Species
The Kevin Richardson Foundation funds the work of organizations who preserve African wildlife species, protect wildlife habitats, and reduce conflict between humans and wild animals. A wide variety of proposals will be considered, including academic research and rescue and rehabilitation projects. The Foundation awards up to US$ 25 thousand to successful applicants. Projects based in southern Africa are favored, however all projects based in Africa will be considered. Applicants must be a registered non-profit organization or trust. KU Leuven — Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme
KU Leuven is the largest university in Flanders, Belgium. As one part of its cooperation to advance international development, KU Leuven offers Global Minds Scholarships to candidates from developing countries. Global Minds is a ‘sandwich’ system, which means that 50% of the research takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the scholar. The scholarships have a duration of 48 months. Mama Cash — Women’s Land and Resource Rights
Mama Cash makes grants in support of grassroots women’s rights groups that focus on environmental justice, for example, groups that address the exclusion of indigenous women from decision-making over their land and groups that fight for their right to water, food, and a clean, safe, and healthy environment. Grants can be used for advocacy, capacity building, public education, or forming alliances across movements. The average grant size is between €20-30 thousand per year. United Nations Foundation — SDG Workshop
The Big Brainstorm seeks young leaders from around the world for a two week workshop to prototype and launch initiatives to tackle the world’s most urgent sustainable development challenges. Participants apply to one of eight Action Groups, including Climate & Sustainability, among others. Each Action Group will prototype initiatives to solve real-world problems. Each Action Group will be given 8 minutes to present to partners, donors, and other young thinkers and activists. United Nations — World Wildlife Day Film Showcase
The United Nations World Wildlife Day organizes a youth art contest along the theme of “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”. Organizers seek art that highlights people making a difference for wildlife. The contest is open to artists from the ages of 4 to 18, entrants will choose a species that has benefited from conservation, and then illustrate it as an individual animal or in its native habitat. German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development — GSMA AgriTech Accelerator
The GSMA AgriTech Accelerator aims to support the growth of innovative, revenue-generating digital agriculture solutions that support smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and resilience to climate change. The GSMA will provide up to 10 selected applicants with technical assistance for a period of two years to support the scaling of their digital solutions. The application deadline is 10 February 2023. European Commission — Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships for Early-Career Researchers
The European Commission, through the Euraxess initiative, offers the Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships to support early-career researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America. ZUKOnnect aims to extend research networks and environments through on-campus research stays at thirteen departments of the University of Konstanz. Subject areas include ecology, limnology, ecotoxicology, botany, amongst many others. The fellowship offers a stipend of €1,200/month for doctoral students and €2,000/month for postdoctoral researchers, as well as travel expenses and access to resources and events. British Ecological Society — Grants for Ecologists in Africa 2023
The British Ecological Society (BES) makes grants for ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. Applicants must be scientists and citizens of a country in Africa or its associated islands; have at least an MSc or equivalent degree; be working for a university or research institution in Africa that provides basic research facilities; and carry out the research in a country in Africa or its associated islands. The maximum value of a grant is £8 thousand for research. An additional sum up to £2 thousand may be requested to fund travel to help grantees develop connections with other ecologists outside their usual peer groups.
