Stephen Lloyd Awards — Sustainable Social Change

Applications are open for the Stephen Lloyd Awards. The awards seek nurturing innovative ideas and projects from all around the world that can lead to practical, sustainable social change. This includes one or more categories of the Terra Viva Grants Directory. Funding of up to £20 thousand will be made available to support award winners in developing their initiatives. In addition, ten shortlisted candidates will receive £2 thousand to further develop their ideas. Ideas have to be submitted by 06 April 2018. Know more

African-German Network of Excellence in Science — Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers

AGNES seeks applications for its mobility grant scheme for junior researchers to strengthen the scientific capacity and networking in Africa through active co-operation. Selected researchers from sub-Saharan African countries will spend research stays between 1 and 2 months at a university/research institute in another sub-Saharan African country, where they will be collaborating with an experienced researcher. The grants covers travel and living costs, as well as a research allowance to the host institute on request to cover some of the research expenses. The application deadline is 06 April 2018. More

International Council for Science — Sustainable African Urban Development

The International Council for Science (ICSU), in partnership with the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), will support up to 11 collaborative research projects across Africa that explore integrated approaches for sustainable urban development in Africa. Applicants should be early career scientists with no more than 10 years work experience following their PhDs. Each selected research project will receive up to €90 thousand for two years. U.S. National Science Foundation — Research on Food, Energy, and Water Systems

The program INFEWS (“Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems”) aims to promote international cooperation that links scientists and engineers from a range of disciplines and organizations to solve the significant global challenges at the nexus of food, energy, and water systems. Proposals including international collaboration are encouraged when they incorporate unique resources, expertise, facilities, or sites of international partners. U.S. Agency for International Development — Women in Science Mentoring Program

The PEER Women in Science Mentoring Program aims to help retain women in science and teach early career scientists to write successful international research awards. The USAID PEER Program invites applications from African Mentor-Mentee Cohorts. Cohorts should be made up of one woman senior faculty mentor and 2-4 women mentees (postdocs and/or junior faculty). Mentors will receive a US$2 thousand honorarium. Mentees will receive training and the opportunity to compete for small seed grants (US$10 thousand) following their participation in the year-long mentoring program. World Bank — Public-Private Infrastructure in Water, Energy, and Transportation

The World Bank’s Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF) welcomes submissions on topics pertaining to private-sector participation in infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and sub-national finance for energy, water, and transportation. PPIAF is looking for knowledge products that provide lessons learned or best practices which can be applied across countries and across regions. USA, UK, and Canada — Humanitarian Grand Challenge

The U.S. Agency for International Development, the UK Department for International Development, and Grand Challenges Canada seek proposals for the “Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge”. Thematic areas that fall in the scope of the Terra Viva Grants Directory include drinking water, sanitation, and energy, among others. Projects should focus on life-saving or life-improving innovations to help the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach people impacted by humanitarian crises caused by conflict. About 10 to 15 selected projects will receive seed funding of C$250 thousand over a maximum of 24 months to support the validation and testing of new approaches. Few selected projects (about 2 to 4) will receive transition-to-scale funding of up to C$1 million with technical support to support the implementation of innovative solutions that have already achieved proof of concept. Eligible applicants include social enterprises and other recognized institutions (e.g., non-profit organizations and for-profit companies) from all around the world. African Union — Scholarship for African Women in Science

The Mwalimu Nyerere African Union Scholarship Scheme encourages the participation of young African female students at postgraduate level, for Masters and PhD programmes in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Candidates must be under 35 years for Masters or under 40 years for PhD studies and have proof of admission to undertake a full time Masters or PhD programme at a recognized university of an African Union Member State. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — Global Citizenship Challenge

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation seeks innovators who positively engage young people (under the age of 30) in Global Citizenship. Investigators are invited to propose innovative and creative solutions that uses new knowledge to positively engage young people in no poverty, zero hunger, clean water and sanitation and other thematic areas of sustainable development. There are no geographical restrictions. Projects must request less that US$ 100 thousand for 12 months. The deadline for proposals is 02 May 2018. About the challenge

Wuppertal Institute — Sustainable Energy Project Support

WISIONS of Sustainability is an initiative of the Wuppertal Institute to nurture innovative energy projects and to foster knowledge exchanges between practitioners. The supporting scheme SEPS (Sustainable Energy Project Support) has launched its first call for proposals in 2018 to focus on projects and knowledge exchanges for the Caribbean, Latin America, and Southern and Southeast Asia.
