The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) will invest up to £9.3 million in demonstration-stage projects of commercial products and solutions that have the potential to transform lives in developing countries. The project must be relevant to one of 10 Sustainable Development Goals listed in the announcement, including SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; SDG 13: Climate Action; SDG 14: Life below Water; SDG 15: Life on Land. The maximum grant award per project is £60 thousand. The lead applicant must be a UK business and will distribute any funding to international (non-UK) partners. G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation — Grants in Natural and Earth Sciences
The G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation makes grants for research and operational support in marine and ocean conservation, earth sciences, climate change, and wildlife management. Merlin Trust — Study Travel Grant for Horticulturists
The Merlin Trust offers travel grants to young horticulturists. The Trust offers up to £1500 to individual applicants to assist with foreign or domestic travel projects. Foreign citizens may apply but must be studying in a British or Irish horticultural training establishment. Eligibility extends to young horticulturists aged between 18 and 34. Academy of Medical Sciences — Global Challenges Research Fund
The Global Challenges Research Fund invites applications to grow research capability in the UK to meet the challenges faced by developing countries. Examples of thematic areas include sustainable agriculture; clean air, water, and sanitation; renewable energy and materials; addressing environmental shocks and long-term environmental changes; and others. Grantseekers may request up to £25 thousand in project support. Both UK and international research organisations (universities, public laboratories, or nonprofit organisations) can be research partners and receive funds. UN Climate Change — Training on Greenhouse Gas Inventories
UN Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea accept applications for a professional training program on the transparency of climate action and support. The program is open to national climate experts from developing countries. The overall goal is to enhance the technical capacity of individuals and to improve the overall competency in reporting on climate change. Roddenberry Foundation — Roddenberry Prize 2020
The Roddenberry Foundation invites proposals for projects that address the challenges of an unpredictable and fast-changing global landscape. The four winners of the Roddenberry Prize will each receive US$250 thousand for their work in one of the following fields: Education, Science, Environment, and Humanity. Waterloo Foundation — Small Grants
The Waterloo Foundations makes small grants to small UK charities which are working to deliver projects in developing countries. Current funding priorities are Nutrition, Education, WASH and Sexual and Reproductive Health. Organizations based in a developing countries can also apply for support but must provide a reference for their work in form of a UK referee. The majority of grants are £5-£10 thousand for one to two year projects. United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization — Fellowships at Chinese Universities
UNESCO and the China Scholarship Council announce the availability of 75 fellowships under “The Great Wall Program” for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Chinese universities. Applications are invited from eligible developing UNESCO member states in Africa, the Asia–Pacific region, Latin America and Caribbean, the Arab States, and Europe and North America. Fellowships are for one year, and most fellowship programs are in English. Among the many participating Chinese universities that admit scholarship students are some that offer agriculture, forestry, environment, and other disciplines in natural resources. Climate Food and Farming Research Network — PhD Research on Climate Change Mitigation in Smallholder Agriculture
CLIFF-GRADS is a joint initiative of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change (CCAFS) low emissions agriculture flagship and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). The program aims to build the capability of early career agricultural students in developing countries to conduct applied research on climate change mitigation in agriculture. CLIFF invites applications from PhD students from developing countries for short-term (4-6 month) scientific training and research stays at CGIAR research centers or affiliated research institutions.
