The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) accepts nominations for the 2022 Al-Sumait Prize in Food Security. The prize is awarded to individuals or institutions who have made significant advancement in food security and nutrition in Africa. The prize is awarded within one of three fields – Food Security, Health and Education – and has a value of US$1 million. The candidates’ research projects must be innovative and have achieved high-impact in the African continent. Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture — Young African Entrepreneurs Competition 2022
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) sponsors a competition for young African entrepreneurs (< 35 years) to showcase their business innovations in agribusiness. Although the focus of the competition is agribusiness, business innovations in other themes (e.g., natural resources, meteorology, urbanization, green economy, etc.) will also be considered. Competition will provide seed funding to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas. The competition is open to all African countries. Tiny Beam Fund — Fellowship: Negative Impacts of Global Industrial Food Animal Production
Tiny Beam Fund offers communication grants to researchers who wish to “address negative impacts of global industrial food animal production” (especially in low- and middle-income countries). Communication Grants are aimed at encouraging academics who have studied the problems caused by global industrial animal agriculture to take steps to share their research. The amount requested should not exceed US$5 thousand for a 12-month period. The fund is directed to PhD researchers from any residence, citizenship, or location. Feed the Future Market Systems and Partnerships — Southern Africa Agricultural Trade & Investment Activity
Market Systems and Partnerships (MSP) invites for-profit businesses in Southern Africa to submit applications. Partnerships will leverage South Africa’s advanced economy and financial system to support mutually beneficial agricultural trade and investment in the southern African region, or increase exports to the United States. MSP will issue grants ranging between US$250 thousand to US$1 million to establish partnerships with firms and/or investors. Businesses legally registered to operate in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, or Zambia are eligible to apply. The Swedish Research Council funds research projects relevant to the fight against poverty and for sustainable development in low income countries. The applicant for a research project grant must be an individual researcher. Research cooperation between scientists in Sweden and scientists in selected low and middle-income countries is encouraged. The maximum amount is SEK 1.5 million per year for a period of four years. Indian National Academy of Sciences — JRD-Tata Fellowships for Visiting Scientists from Developing Countries
India’s National Science Academy administers the JRD-Tata Fellowships to support visiting scientists from the developing world and promote South-South cooperation. The program is open to applicants from developing countries (except India) younger than age 45, and who possess doctorate or masters degrees in science or equivalent degrees in engineering/medicine. Past participants have included several in agriculture, biological sciences, and geo-sciences. The fellowship is for three months and includes transportation, maintenance allowance, accommodation, and contingencies. The application deadlines are 30 April and 31 October of each year. International Fund for Agricultural Development — Rural Youth Employment
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) invites applications for grants to implement rural youth employment opportunities. The grant program will be implemented in nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, for a total amount of up to US$1.2 million. The applicant must ensure a minimum cash contribution of eight per cent of the total proposal cost and an in-kind contribution. The recipient can be a governmental organization, a business development institution, a civil society organization, an academic/research institution or a private sector entity. U.S. African Development Foundation — Agriculture Value Chains and Off-Grid Energy in Benin
USADF, in collaboration with the Government of Benin, invites small and medium-sized enterprises to submit requests for funding and support for the development of their local Beninese businesses. Projects focusing on value chains of corn, cassava, cashew, shea, pineapple, palm oil, rice, peanut and soybean and off-grid energy and craft industries are eligible. Startups can request a total of US$50 thousand for projects in processing, crafts and off-grid energy sectors. Grants range from US$10 thousand to a maximum of US$ 250 thousand.
