The EDF Pulse Africa Awards is open to start-ups, micro-enterprises and small businesses in Africa that develop solutions in the field of energy. The contest invites applications in three categories: (1) Off-grid electrical production; (2) Electrical uses and services; and (3) Access to water – innovative solution to improve access to water through electricity. In order to be eligible, applicants must have a prototype by 21 November 2019, allowing the demonstration of the proposed solution to the general public. Through this call, the European Commission aims to support the development of coffee, tea and horticulture sectors in Tanzania. Priority areas include the improvement of small-scale farmers’ incomes, gender diversity in agriculture, and climate smart agriculture. The GSMA Innovation Fund for Digitisation of Agricultural Value Chains seeks digital solutions to improve smallholders’ financial inclusion, livelihood and climate resilience. The European Commission seeks to support sustainable agricultural development and contribute to the improvement of the food security and the resilience to climatic hazards of rural households in Madagascar. The NOW-Us! (NOthing about us, Without Us) Award honors inspiring inclusive initiatives from Africa and Asia that trigger empowerment of otherwise excluded groups. This includes social enterprises led by women, indigenous groups and ethnic minorities with initiatives that improve access to productive resources (land and water), among others. The three winners (1, 2 and 3) get a grant of respectively €25 thousand, €15 thousand and €10 thousand along with coaching and networking opportunities. The Government of Canada seeks Canadian Small and Medium Organizations (SMO) to apply to the Development Impact Window. The aim of this call is to reduce poverty and vulnerability in developing countries by promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls. Action areas under this call include one on ‘Environment and Climate Action’. The total amount of funding available under this call is up to CA$36 million over five years. The European Commission seeks to reduce rural poverty and malnutrition and to improve rural livelihoods in Zambia. Projects under this call should focus on (1) Increasing investments in agriculture (including fish farming), (2) Facilitating the creation and strengthening of smallholder farmer and agribusiness associations, and (3) Generating employment opportunities, in particular for women and youth.
