The EDF Pulse Africa Awards is open to start-ups, micro-enterprises and small businesses in Africa that develop solutions in the field of energy. The contest invites applications in three categories: (1) Off-grid electrical production; (2) Electrical uses and services; and (3) Access to water – innovative solution to improve access to water through electricity. In order to be eligible, applicants must have a prototype by 21 November 2019, allowing the demonstration of the proposed solution to the general public. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) makes grants to journalists in the Asia-Pacific region to cover stories on the health impacts of climate and environmental change. Particular attention should be given to the adaptation needs, challenges, efforts and success stories of vulnerable and marginalized communities, women and youth. Eligibility extends to professional journalists and other expert media practitioners. EJN expects to award around 10 small grants at an average grant size of US$2 thousand each. The Nordic Climate Facility accepts applications for the current call for proposals on the theme of “Testing the Business Viability of Climate Solutions”. Projects should be implemented through partnerships between relevant Nordic institutions and qualified local partners in eligible low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America (full list in the announcement). The Climate Systems Analysis Group (CSAG) at the University of Cape Town organizes a “winter school” intensive course, with the next one scheduled for five days in July 2019. The course is presented by facilitators from CSAG and other institutions to take participants through the full spectrum of topics related to climate and climate change, with an emphasis on issues in developing countries. Energy Assistance is an employees’ association of electricity utilities in Europe that offers technical assistance to communities in the developing world needing electricity. Examples are electricity projects for water supply, village lighting, agriculture, schools and hospitals, and related local needs. The Association posts an application form. The European Commission invites proposals for the Support to Zambia Energy Sector: Increased Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production (IAEREP) Program. The aim of the program is to increase access to affordable, reliable and modern energy for all in Zambia. Eligible lead-applicants must be established in a Member State of the European Union or in other countries eligible under the 11th EDF. The Carbon Footprint Challenge is open for ideas and solution to decrease carbon footprint of manufacturing, industrial processes as well as for products throughout their entire value chain. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), ESRC, NERC and Innovate UK invite applications for the ‘UKRI-GCRF Sustainable Energy and International Development: Beyond Technology’ call. The call aims to support cutting-edge research and innovation which addresses the problems faced by developing countries. Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply. Candidates must be from a UK based organisation, however, the call also funds international co-investigators. There will be four proposals funded of up to £1.5 million per grant. UNFCCC-GIR-CASTT is a professional training on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories to national experts from developing countries. The goal is to enhance the technical capacity of individuals and to improve the overall competency in reporting and in contributing to climate action. The four-week intensive training course will begin on 22 July and be held in the Republic of Korea. Current government officials, consultants and researchers in the fields of greenhouse gas emissions, emission reductions, and climate change are encouraged to apply. Participants will be provided a return ticket from and to their home countries, as well as room and board for the duration of the training. Applications have to be sent by 10 May 2019.
