The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the specialised UN agency, funds journalists from around Africa to attend the workshop ‘Reporting Rural Poverty and Agricultural Development’. The programme aim is to enable journalists to tell the story of rural development.  Participants will have the opportunity to attend the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) in Kigali in September 2019. Eligibility extends to full-time journalists from across Africa. Bursaries include air travel expenses (economy class), accommodation, local transfers and meals. The European Commission seeks to improve the livelihoods for smallholder farmers and small-scale fishers to develop a competitive and environmentally-sustainable cocoa sector and climate-resilient aquaculture value chain in Liberia. Applicants may request up to €4 million unter this call (varying by activity). Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations registered in the APC region or the European Union. The Rural Resilience activity aims to enable individuals and communities to engage in strong and sustainable market systems rather than continuing to rely on humanitarian assistance. Proposed projects need to provide livelihoods and employment opportunities, build capacity and stimulate market systems growth with focus on nutrition-sensitive agriculture and natural resource management. Over the course of five year, USAID will provide US$30 million in funding. The 2019 ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women seeks to identify and recognize ASEAN-based, early to mid-career women who are using applied sciences in the theme of the “Circular Economy”. The top two finalists will be invited to compete in a pitch competition during an ASEAN Ministerial event in Singapore in October 2019. The overall winner will receive $20 thousand. Applications are open for the World Bank/ACE II Masters Fellowships for African female scientists. Priority areas include agriculture, among others. Selected fellows will receive financial support that covers tuition fees, living expenses, research, and travel. Eligibility extends to female nationals under 35 years from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, or Burundi. Closing date for applications is 30 June 2019. UNIDO ITPO Italy invites applications for the international contest “Innovative Ideas and Technologies in Agribusiness”. Innovative ideas and technologies relative to the entire agribusiness value chain – developed by startups, businesses, research centers and academia – that could be successfully applied in Developing Countries (DCs) are eligible. Applications from enterprises, startups, universities, research centres, NGOs, researchers, and smallholders farmers are welcome. Winners in 7 categories will be invited to the Award Ceremony at EXCO 2019 (May 2019), receive mentorship, and have access to possible business partnerships. Access Agriculture invites applicants for the Young Entrepreneur Challenge Fund. Participants have the chance to propose innovative business ideas or expand their existing business, around the dissemination of agricultural videos. Selected young entrepreneurs will receive a Digisoft smart projector with an in-built computer that contains a library with over 200 training videos. USAID seeks sustainable forest management project in Guatemala with the aim to reduce emissions from land use change while generating direct economic and environmental benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises and community-based organizations. The project aims to improve the performance and sustainability of local forestry and forest-related businesses, while building healthy forests and livelihoods. The total amount available under this call is US$ 18.5 million. A minimum of 15% of the total project costs has to be covered by the recipient. USAID welcomes applications from organizations (including individuals, corporations, and non-profit organizations) legally registered in Guatemala. The deadline for applications is 10 April 2019. SNV invites expressions of interest from private sector-led agribusinesses to co-invest in the implementation of business models under the Climate Smart Agriculture East Africa Project (CSA-EA). The goal is to increase the availability of accessible climate smart food for the population in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Selected SMEs and cooperatives will receive a maximum co-investment of 50% or €200 thousand, whichever is lower, for the proposed solutions. The International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) will support 30 young academics and professionals for research on youth engagement in agribusiness and rural economic activities in Africa. The research has to be carried out in the following countries: Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Senegal, and Zambia. Applicants must currently be registered in PhD or masters programs in recognized universities, and may not be more than 40 years old. The program particularly invites applications from women. The accepted applicants will be offered coaching and training through IITA to build their research knowledge and skills. Awards for research grants are up to US$10 thousand.
