The European Development Fund aims to contribute to the economic development of coffee and cocoa value chains in Uganda. Priority areas includes supporting smallholders to adopt more climate resilient systems and practices, gender diversity in agriculture, and sustainable and organic coffee/cocoa production. Grants may range from €300 thousand to €600 thousand. Eligibility to apply extends to NGOs established in Uganda and the EU. Deadline for submission of concept notes is 18 August 2019. Find details

BBSRC and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) announce a joint call to address challenges related to the sustainable enhancement of agriculture (including crops and livestock) and aquaculture (including finfish and shellfish) in low- and middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Asia and South-Eastern Asia regions. BBSRC and NERC have allocated a maximum of up to £3.4 million, to fund multidisciplinary research projects of up to 24 months in duration. Proposals must be led by a principal investigator in the UK. The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) invites applications for the Agricultural Research and Innovation Fellowship for Africa (ARIFA). Qualified African candidates will be trained in ARIFA-affiliated universities and centers of Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in affiliated countries abroad. The fellowship covers international air travel, tuition fees and a monthly stipend. Applicants must be under 35 years old and be citizens of one of the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Niger, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda. The Summer School “Transformative Changes in Agriculture and Food Systems”, jointly organized by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the Food Security Center (FSC) of the University of Hohenheim in Germany, will take place in Laguna, Philippines (9-27 September 2019). The FSC will offer up to 16 scholarships for PhD students from Africa, Asia, and Latin America to participate in the course. Kinaya Ventures is an innovation and investment platform with the mission to connect startups, corporations, and investors. The Spring Fellowship is a 4-month accelerator program, designed for African entrepreneurs and early to growth-stage startups in the areas Agtech, Foodtech, AdTech, MarTech, RetailTech. The GSMA Innovation Fund for Digitisation of Agricultural Value Chains seeks digital solutions to improve smallholders’ financial inclusion, livelihood and climate resilience. Projects should be implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia. Funding of up to £220 thousand per project is available, as well as mentoring, and project support. The European Commission seeks to promote entrepreneurs (startups) with innovative solutions that improve the food and nutritional security in Honduras. Priority areas include mitigating the negative effects of climate change and unsustainable use of energy and natural resources. The grant amount requested under this call must be €826 thousand. The European Commission seeks to reduce rural poverty and malnutrition and to improve rural livelihoods in Zambia. Projects under this call should focus on (1) Increasing investments in agriculture (including fish farming), (2) Facilitating the creation and strengthening of smallholder farmer and agribusiness associations, and (3) Generating employment opportunities, in particular for women and youth. The overall amount made available under this call is €26 million. In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead applicant must an established organization in a Member State of the European Union or Zambia. The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and partners seek innovators to design a tool that can support public finance decisions based on an integrated approach for the management of agriculture sector risks. The tool should help to prioritize investments in resilience and preparedness to reduce agriculture losses, poverty and food insecurity. All approaches should be scalable to regions or countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The winner(s) will participate in a 2-day expert workshop in London (June 2019) and receive up to US$300 thousand to develop their proposed tool. The call for applications closes 17 June 2019. About
