U.S. Department of State — Combating Wildlife Trafficking through Outreach and Awareness

The U.S. Government announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects that counter trafficking of endangered and protected species for use in traditional medicine globally. The U.S. Government will mobilize resources, and strengthen operational capacity to combat nature crimes, including wildlife and timber trafficking. The program goal is to engage civil society and/or local NGOs in the prevention of trafficking of endangered and protected species. Funding ranges from US$500 thousand to US$1 million. Elsevier — Renewable Transformation Challenge

Elsevier announces the biennial Renewable Transformation Challenge. The challenge invites innovative proposals which contribute to the goal of transitioning to 100% renewable energy. The first prize winner receives €20 thousand. Eligibility to apply extends to organizations such as private enterprises, NGOs, and research institutions for undertaking projects and programs that help move the world toward an energy system supplied entirely by renewable energy sources. Heifer International — Pitch AgriHack Competition

Pitch AgriHack is a digital agriculture competition focused on accelerating entrepreneurial growth in the agriculture sector in Africa. The competition invites African businesses to pitch their approach to driving technological innovation in the agriculture sector. The competition provides cash prizes totaling US$45 thousand. A fourth invite-only category will award up to US$1.5 million in grants to scalable ventures that are already generating measurable impact for Africa’s smallholder farmers. U.S. Department of State — Strengthening Sustainable Communities in Panama and Costa Rica

The U.S. Department of State makes grants to incentivize support and help build sustainable communities in Panama and Costa Rica through the development of small to medium-sized business enterprises supported by small business development centers. Track one will focus on developing sustainable tourism for economic development. Track two will focus on workforce development which includes agriculture sectors. European Commission — Development of Green Energies in Haiti

The European Commission (EC) seeks to reduce Haiti’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The EC will fund the development and better penetration of renewable energies at the local level. Applicants may request up to €1.6 million in project funding. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations. The deadline for submission of concept notes is 07 July 2023. More information

U.S. Government — Environmental Defenders Capacity Building and Small Grants

The U.S. Government seeks to reduce violence against environmental defenders and protect and advance environmental defenders’ human rights. Applicants must be non-governmental organizations with a track record of working with threatened grassroots environmental defenders. Priority countries include Brazil, Colombia, DRC, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, and Vietnam. All projects should aim to have impact that leads to measurable reductions in threats and violence against grassroots organizations. The estimated total program funding is US$4.2 million. UNESCO — Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation

The UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals, groups of individuals, institutes, or organizations in the management or preservation of the environment. This refers to contributions in environmental and natural resources research; environmental education and training; environmental awareness; and activities to establish and manage protected areas such as biosphere reserves and natural World Heritage sites. Nominations for the Prize can be made by UNESCO member states and by international organizations, or by NGOs which have consultative status with UNESCO. The financial prize is US$100 thousand, donated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman. The deadline for nominations (English, French) is 15 July 2023. Prize for Environmental Preservation

U.S. Government — Countering the Illicit Exotic Pet Trade

The project aims to combat wildlife trafficking across Central and South Asia including India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The aim is to increase the capacity and ability of governments to identify, interdict, investigate, and prosecute this illegal trade and dismantle the organized crime networks. Awards range from US$300 thousand to US$600 thousand. Eligibility extends to US-based and foreign non-profit organizations and educational institutions. U.S. Department of State — Countering Wildlife Trafficking in Latin America

The U.S. Department of State seeks to strengthen the capacity of wildlife institutions and actors in Latin America. The call seeks to enhance law enforcement and justice sector efforts to counter wildlife trafficking, ultimately helping to disrupt wildlife trafficking operations, and removing opportunities for criminal organizations to profit from illicit proceeds derived from the wildlife trade. Funding ranges from US$750 thousand to US$3 million. Eligibility for this award is restricted to US-based and foreign non-profit organizations and educational institutions. U.S. Mission to Brazil — Small Grants

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil announce an open competition for organizations interested in submitting proposals to organize a comprehensive small grants program. The Embassy supports initiatives that build capacity for groups protecting the environment and working with communities in areas critical to biodiversity and environmental protection. Individuals can apply for grants of up to US$5 thousand, organizations may request up to US$25 thousand.
