Enabel — Prize for Women Entrepreneurs

The Awa Prize highlights women entrepreneurs from Belgian development cooperation countries and their projects. The prize aims to promote women entrepreneurs in their local community and strengthen them in their entrepreneurial success. The winner receives €50 thousand in support of their enterprise and one week in Belgium. Participating countries for the 2023 edition: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DRC, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestine, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda. The competition is open to any woman founder or majority/equal partner in a company based in one of the selected countries. Registrations open from 05 to 15 September 2023. Details here

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations — World Soil Day Award

The World Soil Day Award (WSDA) recognizes individuals and/or institutions that have made an effort to organize successful celebrations in the framework of the World Soil Day campaign of the previous year. The award consists of US$15 thousand and a trip to Thailand. The award is open to individuals, non-profit organizations, universities, and private companies. United States Agency for International Development — Oceans Plastics

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks applications for a cooperative agreement from qualified entities to implement the “Oceans Plastics – Solid Waste Management Activity.” The activity’s goal is to reduce waste in municipalities leading to cleaner oceans in the Dominican Republic. USAID intends to provide US$15 million in total funding over a five year period. Eligibility is not restricted. The closing date for applications is 18 September 2023. Link

United Nations University — PhD Internships in Economics

UNU-WIDER (World Institute for Development Economics Research) invites applications for its PhD research internships program in Helsinki, Finland. Preference is for applicants who live or work in developing countries, and who are in the later stages of their PhD. Program themes in WIDER include the economics of energy, climate change, food security, and others. UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant and a monthly stipend of €1,850 during the period of the fellowship. Deadlines for submission of applications are 31 March and 30 September each year. TREE Fund — Funding for Arboriculture and Urban Forestry

The Jack Kimmel International Grant Program makes grants to researchers in arboriculture and urban forestry worldwide. Projects of one to three years are funded to a maximum of US$10 thousand. In 2023, the grant program will be focused specifically on Arboriculture; Tree Health; and Risk Assessment. To apply, applicants have to send a brief Letter of Inquiry (LOI) before 15 September 2023. TREE Fund — Research in Arboriculture

The John Z. Duling Grant Program offers funding up to US$25 thousand during 1-3 years to support exploratory work in the early stages of untested but potentially transformative research in arboriculture. In 2023, the program will focus on Propagation, Plant Selection, Development of New Varieties, and Planting/Establishment. Applicants can be of any national or ethnic origin. Both ENDS — JWH Initiative

The Joke Waller-Hunter (JWH) Initiative offers grants to advance the leadership of young individuals working for or affiliated with environmental civil society organizations in developing and emerging countries. JWH especially encourages the nomination of young women and local community leaders. Grants range from €2,500 to €7,000. The next nomination deadline is 15 September 2023. Details here

UK Government — Darwin Initiative Grants

The Darwin Initiative invites applications for proposals that deliver effective and successful biodiversity conservation as well as poverty reduction projects. Darwin Initiative Capability & Capacity projects may request between £50 thousand to £200 thousand for projects that focus on developing the capability and capacity of national and local organizations. Innovation projects ranging from £10 thousand to £200 thousand must test a novel approach that if proven could scale to deliver results for biodiversity conservation. Projects led by in-territory partners/organizations are encouraged. The deadline to apply is 18 September 2023. Darwin Initiative

Velux Stiftung — Sustainable and Integrative Forest Management

Velux Stiftung seeks solutions for adapting to or mitigating climate change, promoting biodiversity, providing resilient ecosystems services while supplying sustainable forest products. Proposals can be for an implementation-oriented research project that has a high potential to foster change in practice. Projects dealing with all types of forests: boreal, temperate, tropical and subtropical forests are welcome. Projects may last from 1 to 4 years. Funding of up to CHF100 thousand per year is available. At least one partner needs to be from a university or a research institution. The deadline for proposals is 23 September 2023. Details here

UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council — Standard Research Grant

BBSRC supports a range of activities from research projects to technology development, new infrastructure and equipment, use of equipment and facilities, networks, and summer schools. Case Studies include the themes of agriculture, sustainable energy and climate change. Applicants from industry and academia can request a maximum of £2 million per project. Projects must be based in the UK, however, where a suitable company cannot be found in the UK, an overseas partnership may be possible. Applications must be submitted by 27 September 2023.
