Alfred Wegner Institute — Training in Observational Oceanography

The Alfred Wegner Institute hosts the Nippon Foundation-POGO Centre of Excellence. The program provides training and career development in observational oceanography, using facilities at Helgoland and Sylt in the North Sea. The next training program is open to participants from developing and emerging countries. Trainees must have at least a first degree in science. Preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a position in a research or academic institution in a developing country, and who anticipate returning to the country after completion of the training. The program offers scholarships to cover travel, accommodation, tuition, and a modest allowance. The application deadline is 31 December 2022. POGO Centre of Excellence

Asia Research Institute — Asian Graduate Student Fellowship

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) invites applications from citizens of Asian countries for the Asian Graduate Student Fellowship. This opportunity includes a virtual fellowship and an in-person fellowship. Selected participants will undergo an intensive six-week program of independent research, training in academic writing, and mentorship meetings. Participants will take part in an intensive course on English academic writing. The fellowship program is open to junior scholars in the humanities and social sciences undertaking research focused on Southeast Asia. Wild Animal Initiative — Fellowship Program

Wild Animal Initiative invites early-career scientists to apply to a fellowship program. Fellowships are offered to individuals to conduct wild animal welfare research that is explicitly focused on combining animal welfare and the study of wild animals. Wild Animal Initiative offers a stipend of up to US$60 thousand per year for salary and living expenses. Eligible candidates can request an additional allowance of up to US$25 thousand per year for field work, consumables and other research related costs. Applicants must have a PhD or be a full-time graduate student expecting to graduate within 3 months of application. Applications must be received by 01 January 2023. German Federal Environmental Foundation — PhD Fellowships

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) offers 60 research fellowships per year to young scientists in Germany and internationally across all disciplines of environmental protection. The funding period is 36 months with a monthly stipend of €1,500. DBU welcomes subjects of international importance, although the work has to be done mainly in Germany, and with a clear reference to the German environmental situation. World Academy of Sciences — Postdoctoral Fellowships for Early-Career Researchers

In partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), TWAS invites early-career researchers from 21 Least Developed Member Countries to apply to the IsDB-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The fellowship will support research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, providing recipients with high-level training in areas relevant to sustainability science. University of Pennsylvania — Visiting Fellowship for African Scholars

The Penn Development Research Initiative (DevLab at the University of Pennsylvania) seeks to build capacity for rigorous research on pressing policy challenges facing low- and middle-income countries, by providing training and research opportunities for emerging researchers. The university invites researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa to apply for a semester-long fellowship for the 2023 Fall semester (September – December 2023). Visiting fellows will have the opportunity to audit doctoral-level classes, carry out independent research and present their research. U.S. Department of State — Global Undergraduate Exchange Program

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) provides scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students from the developing world for one semester of non-degree full-time study combined with community service, professional development, and cultural enrichment in the USA. Students from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply. The eligible countries are listed in the call. Candidates need to apply through the U.S. embassies in their home countries. American University in Cairo — African Graduate Fellowships

The African Graduate Fellowship offers African students with limited financial means the opportunity to pursue a master degree at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Nationals of African countries (excluding Egypt) can apply for full-time study in any graduate program offered at the AUC, including the Master of Science programs in Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, and others. The fellowship covers tuition fees, housing, a monthly allowance and health insurance. The application deadlines are 15 January (fall semester) and 17 October (spring semester). Canadian International Development Research Center — IDRC Research Awards 2023

The International Development Research Center (IDRC) makes research awards to citizens and permanent residents of Canada, and to citizens of developing countries. The award provides for a one-year paid program of research in addition to hands-on experience in research management, grant administration, and the use of knowledge from an international perspective. Six positions are available at IDRC’s head office in Ottawa (Canada). Program areas include climate resilience and sustainable food systems; and several others. Applicants should be enrolled, or have previously completed, their masters or doctoral degrees at recognized universities. Dalai Lama Fellows — Mentorship for Emerging Leaders

The Dalai Lama Fellowship offers emerging leaders from all around the world mentorship and coaching to design and implement their own original field project addressing a global challenge. Project areas include environmental sustainability, among others. The fellowship does not offer funding for projects, instead it offers coaching and a global community.
