French Institute for Development Research — Research on Plant Biodiversity, Call 3

Funded by IRD in collaboration with several other French organizations, the program “Sud Expert Plantes Développement Durable” (SEP2D) aims to reinforce scientific research on plant biodiversity in 22 tropical countries. The eligible countries are distributed across West Africa; Central Africa; Indian Ocean; and Southeast Asia. Research themes in SEP2D are forest biodiversity; mitigation of mining activities; commercial applications of plant biodiversity; and agro-biodiversity.  In Call 3, proposals should address at least one and ideally more than one of the three priority research axes: (i)  multi-layer knowledge of plant biodiversity and plant ecosystems; (ii) plant resources and their utilization by communities and stakeholder institutions (ecosystem services); and (iii) strategies and operational approaches for the sustainable management of plant resources and the conservation of habitats and ecosystem services.  Funding is up to €30 thousand for national projects, and up to €60 thousand for regional and international projects. In each participating country, SEP2D will be managed by an academic institution which will build a consortium of national and/or international partners. Examples of partners include private companies, NGOs, farmers’ associations, financial institutions, and similar. Funding is up to €35 thousand for national projects, and up to €75 thousand for regional and international projects. The application deadline is 31 December 2016. Link

International Association for Plant Taxonomy — Research in Plant Systematics

The IAPT announces the 2017 round of its competitive grants program in plant systematics, with emphasis on funding students and young investigators in developing countries, but open to applicants worldwide. The award should preferably be used for supporting travel to institutions, laboratory investigations, or fieldwork (if this includes interaction with in-country specialists). The maximum grant is US$1 thousand. The application deadline is 31 January 2017. Link

Inter-Research Science Center — Prizes and Fellowships 2017

The International Ecology Institute in Germany annually selects top performers worldwide in the field of ecology for the Ecology Institute Prize and the IRPE Prize. The winner of the Ecology Institute Prize will be awarded €6 thousand; the winner of the IRPE Prize will receive €3 thousand. Nominations are invited from research ecologists worldwide. The closing date for nominations is 30 April 2017.  Additionally, the Center calls for nominations for the Otto Kinne Foundation Fellowship, with deadline on 31 October 2017. Link

Cooper Ornithological Society — Mewaldt-King Grants

The Society makes several categories of grants, including the Mewaldt-King grants for research in ornithology and avian biology by university graduate students of any nationality in any country. Many past grants have supported research in tropical regions. Grants are US$1 thousand. The application deadline is 15 January of each year. Link

Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology — Training Courses, Seminars, and Workshops 2016

The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMO BIOTROP) aims to increase the knowledge and skills of ASEAN professionals and students on a wide range of topics in tropical biology.  Unless otherwise indicated, training courses are conducted at the SEAMEO BIOTROP headquarter in Bogor, Indonesia. Priority is for nationals of SEAMEO member countries, especially in the sponsored courses.  The current list of BIOTROP courses and seminars are scheduled from May through October 2016. Application forms should be submitted to the respective course coordinators at least one month in advance of any training event. Link
