United Nations University — Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships 2018

The United Nations University offers postdoctoral fellowships to young scholars and policymakers, especially from the developing world. One fellowships program is with the UNU’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS); the other is with the UNU’s Center for Policy Research (UNU-CPR). The research themes include ecosystem services; water and urban development; governance for sustainable development; low-carbon technology; and others. New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade — NZ Partnerships for International Development Fund 2017/2018

The New Zealand Partnerships for International Development Fund is a contestable fund open to New Zealand organizations. It aims to encourage partnerships between New Zealand organizations and in-country partners in the developing world, with emphasis on the Pacific region and Southeast Asia. Priority areas for support include agriculture, fisheries, tourism, energy, and water and sanitation — among others. The Fund encourages multi-activity projects for up to five years. The next application deadline (Round 12) is 02 March 2018 for drafts (partners who would like to receive feedback on their application, prior to submitting it to the Round) and 30 March 2018 for full applications. BirdsCaribbean — Hurricane Relief Fund

The BirdsCaribbean Hurricane Relief Fund accepts applications for birds and habitat recovery. The fund aims to advance the recovery and ongoing conservation of birds and their habitats on islands affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and assist conservationists working on these islands regain capacity lost in the hurricane and necessary to undertake recovery and conservation projects. The Hurricane Relief Fund is positioned to support small projects with up to US$5 thousand. Larger grants of up to US$10 thousand may be considered in exceptional cases. Eligible islands are Dominica, Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Eustatius, St. Barts, St. Kitts, Saba, St Martin/Sint Maarten, British and US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands, and Cuba. AuthorAID — Small Grants for Researchers in Developing Countries: Travel Grants

AuthorAID announces its second round of small travel grants to support researchers in developing countries with travel and workshops. AuthorAID plans to award five travel grants of US$1,500 each for early-career researchers to present their research at an academic conference. Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund — Evaluating the Caribbean Islands Hotspot

The CEPF invites applications from civil society organizations to submit proposals to conduct an evaluation of lessons learned in relation to the Caribbean Islands Regional Implementation Team (RIT). CEPF intends to reinvest in this hotspot, and will use the results of this consultancy to inform future investment. The closing date for submissions is 08 January 2018. Link

Swissuniversities Development and Cooperation Network — Consortia for North-South Education and Research (2nd Call)

The Swissuniversities Development and Cooperation Network (SUDAC) calls for various types of Swiss higher education institutions to partner with each other and with partners in the Global South to develop Consortia for Education and Research (COFER). COFER will aim for stronger integration of research, education, and implementation through new collaborative networks oriented towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Each COFER must address at least two SDGs; provide at least 50% matching funds; and provide funding for partners in the Global South. U.S. Department of Commerce — Ocean Exploration Funding Opportunity 2018

NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration & Research (OER) seeks to enhance ocean exploration and scientific knowledge of the unknown or poorly known areas of the ocean. OER seeks proposals focused on three topics including: (1) Exploration of the deep marine environments; (2) Discovery and exploration of prehistorically and historically significant submerged marine heritage sites; and (3) Novel or innovative technologies and methodologies that could increase the pace and scope of ocean exploration. (Note: For themes 1 and 2 proposals outside the US EEZ and the US Outer Continental Shelf in the Gulf of Mexico will not be accepted.). Eligible applicants are institutions of higher education; non-profit institutions; state, local, and tribal governments; for-profit organizations; and U.S. territories. Foreign researchers may participate by submitting a subaward through collaboration with an eligible U.S. entity. The maximum support per project is US$ 750 thousand. Fauna & Flora International — Global Trees Campaign Research Opportunities

The Global Trees Campaign has identified a number of research opportunities which would contribute to tree species conservation and may be of interest for MSc and MRes students looking to collaborate with applied practitioners for their research projects in 2018. The campaign shares the priority research questions on their website. Interested students are invited to apply. ETH Zurich — Seed Grants for Swiss-Asian Research Collaboration 2018

In partnership with Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), ETH Zurich promotes scientific cooperation with key institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. ETH Zurich currently calls for proposals from Swiss researchers with partners in China (incl. Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan, South Korea, and the ASEAN region. Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation — Navjot Sodhi Conservation Research Award 2017

The ATBC makes the Navjot Sodhi Conservation Research Award each year to a student from a developing country. Eligibility extends to ATBC student members who are nationals of tropical developing countries, and who are conducting research that directly contributes to biodiversity conservation within the tropics. All individuals who have been students within the previous 12 months can apply. The award is up to US$500. The deadline for submitting nominations and self-nominations is 31 December.
