Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations — Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture aims to promote and support the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. The goal is to enable farmers from developing countries around the world access to adapted varieties leading to increased productivity. The Benefit-sharing Fund funds single country projects (maximum funding/project: US$ 250 thousand) and multi-country projects (maximum funding/project: US$ 450 thousand) for up to 48 months. Eligible applicants include governmental and non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and regional and international organizations based in developing countries. National Geographic Society — Reducing Demand for illegal Wildlife

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals to reduce the illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products. The call is open for proposals focused on marine and terrestrial species. Projects may be focused around conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Preference will be given to applicants who are residents or citizens of the relevant regions for the consumption of or demand for illegal wildlife products. Applicants may request up to US$50 thousand, though grants are typically funded for less than US$30 thousand. Short deadline: 03 January 2018. Interested?

American Academy for the Advancement of Science — Global Innovation through Science and Technology 2018

The program Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) invites scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators in 136 emerging countries to compete in the GIST Tech-I Competition 2018. The competition is open to everyone between the ages of 18 to 40 in any sector who has either an idea or a startup in the form of an invention, a product, a service, an app, any combination of these, or something entirely unique. Each participant in the competition submits an executive summary and a promotional video. The top 10 semi-finalists will advance to the Tech-I finals during the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Istanbul, Turkey to showcase their ventures and receive intensive training. Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment — Innovative Use of Land Contracts

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) will make two grants of US$10 thousand each for innovative uses of www.OpenLandContracts.org, an online repository of publicly available commercial agriculture and forestry contracts. Users of the website can search contracts by different categories; view summaries of key social, human rights, environmental, fiscal, and operational provisions; compare certain provisions across contracts; and download full contracts. United Nations University — Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships 2018

The United Nations University offers postdoctoral fellowships to young scholars and policymakers, especially from the developing world. One fellowships program is with the UNU’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS); the other is with the UNU’s Center for Policy Research (UNU-CPR). The research themes include ecosystem services; water and urban development; governance for sustainable development; low-carbon technology; and others. Tinker Foundation — Martha T. Muse Prize for Antarctica 2018

The Martha T. Muse Prize for Science and Policy in Antarctica is presented to an individual in his or her early or mid-career who demonstrates potential for sustained and significant contributions to enhance the understanding and/or preservation of Antarctica. AuthorAID — Small Grants for Researchers in Developing Countries: Travel Grants

AuthorAID announces its second round of small travel grants to support researchers in developing countries with travel and workshops. AuthorAID plans to award five travel grants of US$1,500 each for early-career researchers to present their research at an academic conference. Conservation Strategy Fund — Training Course on Economic Tools for Conservation 2018

The Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) invites applications for its annual international training course, “Economic Tools for Conservation”, to be held at the University of California Berkeley in July 2018. The course is aimed at managers of conservation programs and protected areas; directors of NGOs; and representatives of government agencies. Applicants from disciplines such as biology, forestry, law, anthropology, and economics are encouraged to apply. Accepted applicants are responsible for seeking their own funding. MIT Center for Collective Intelligence — Climate CoLab: Absorbing Climate Impacts

The MIT Climate CoLab organizes contests to solicit the world’s best ideas to prevent and adapt to climate change. The current contest invites projects that focus on the question “How can climate risk insurance be linked with other forms of social protection to help vulnerable communities absorb climate impacts?” The UN Climate Resilience Initiative A2R and InsuResilience will provide seed funding for the implementation of the winning proposal (€40 thousand) and mentoring, training and technical assistance (€12 thousand euros). University of Bergen — PhD Course on Food Security

The Bergen Summer Research School offers parallel short courses for PhD students and young researchers on themes of urgent societal problems focusing on the transition to sustainability. One of the six courses will concentrate on the question “Can more food be obtained from the ocean in a sustainable way?”. Another course will deal with food and nutrition insecurity. Stipends to participate in the course are available for qualified individuals who are currently enrolled for studies and carrying out research in a list of eligible developing countries.
