National Geographic Society — Biodiversity Exploration and Discovery

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals from around the world to find and describe new species, and better understand the patterns of distribution and abundance of poorly known groups of organisms. Please note that NatGeo requires that any expeditions intending to collect specimens have permissions from and operate under the biodiversity legislation of the host country. Preference will be given to proposals from applicants residing in the country of fieldwork. Projects that include the active involvement of early career conservationists are encouraged. The National Geographic Society supports projects that leverage the power of crowd-sourced citizen science data collection to help support the discovery of species, bridge biodiversity gaps, and accelerate biodiversity data collection, identification, and classification. Citizen science projects must support citizen scientists to conduct inventories, surveys, research, and/or encourage and train students and other citizens in data collection and fieldwork activities. National Geographic Society — Artificial Intelligence for Species Discovery

The National Geographic Society seeks proposals for artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that support the discovery of new species, bridge biodiversity gaps, and accelerate biodiversity data collection, identification, and classification. Priority will be given to projects that use AI to address challenges in filling biodiversity data gaps, generate data and develop open-source technologies, or use AI and machine learning to process massive and complex datasets. Frida — Climate and Environmental Justice Media Fellowship

In partnership with OpenGlobalRights, FRIDA provides a 5-month training program to young feminists on climate and environmental justice activism and digital journalism. Women between ages of 18 and 30 based anywhere in Sub Saharan Africa, Asia, the MENA region, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe are eligible to apply. Fellows will receive mentorship and are expected to dedicate 4-5 hours per week (total of 15-20 hours per month) from August to December 2019. Applications are submitted through a short Google form. Biodiversity Revisited — Essay Competition

Biodiversity Revisited seeks applications for an early career essay competition. Early-career researchers are invited to share their view on biodiversity conservation or develop a provocative idea on how biodiversity research and practice can be improved. The essays submitted will be part of the discussions at the international Biodiversity Revisited Symposium taking place in Austria (September 2019). U.S. Agency for International Development — Strengthening Capacity in Agriculture, Livelihoods and Environment

SCALE accepts research proposals from organizations that are currently implementing a development or emergency program for an Evidence of Impact study. The request for research proposals needs to focus on interventions at the intersection of agriculture and the management of water resources. Council for the Advancement of Science Writing — New Horizons Travel Fellowships 2019

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers travel fellowships to cover the cost of attending the annual New Horizons in Science briefing for journalists. The annual conference brings together top-rank scientists and leading science reporters for an in-depth look at seminal developments in science. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the day-long professional workshops sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers. The maximum reimbursement provided is $1,200. INK Fellows Program — Innovators and Change Makers 2019

The INK Fellows Program brings together young innovators and change makers from India and other emerging economies in a supportive peer group, and offers them media exposure to accelerate their ability to impact society. OpenIDEO — BridgeBuilder Competition 2019

OpenIDEO and GHR Foundation jointly invite proposals that address urgent global challenges in radically new ways. The BridgeBuilder Challenge seeks solutions that connect peace, prosperity, and the planet. Submissions should target a specific, pressing, and solvable need across two or more of these themes. The competition is open to non-profit and for-profit organizations as well as individuals. Proposed projects should not be longer than three years. The selected winners share US$1 million. Katapult Ocean — Startup Investment for Tech Innovations

Katapult Ocean invests in tech companies with positive impact on the ocean. The accelerator program provides investments and mentorship for ocean technology startups from all around the world. The sectors covered by the program include ocean health, fisheries, and energy, among others. Startups will receive a US$150 thousand investment in their company in exchange for 8% equity.
