The Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida) seeks applications for its Planning Grants program. Grants are awarded to help entrepreneurs explore new markets and research their technology’s impact on the environment and poverty reduction. The programme’s emphasis is on cleantech products, systems, processes, and services in the following focus areas: climate change adaptation/mitigation; ecosystem services; renewable energy; water and sanitation; and urban development. Eligibility extends to companies or organisations based in Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. U.S. Department of Agriculture — Borlaug Cocoa Fellowships 2019
The USDA invites applications for the 2019 Borlaug Cocoa Fellowships. The program aims to provide fellows with the skills and knowledge in the production and marketing of cocoa and cocoa products. Fellows from eligible countries in West Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean work with a mentor at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service or a U.S. university for up to 12 weeks. The U.S. mentor later visits the fellow’s home institution to continue collaboration. The research priorities vary by region and country. The application deadline is 31 December 2018. The SDC calls for proposals for projects on sustainable water management for a water-secure world by applying nature based solutions for water. The proposed projects under this call should focus on Latin America, Africa and the Balkans. Eligibility extends to businesses, non-profit organizations, and governments. Swedish International Development Agency — Training on Healthy Livestock and Safe Food
Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. Organizations in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda are invited to nominate candidates for the 12-months Training Programme ‘Healthy Livestock and Safe Food’. The overall objective of this programme is to reduce poverty and vulnerability among smallholder farmers. Candidates representing government organisations, private companies or NGOs at national, regional or local level are encouraged to apply. The training will take place in Sweden. Sida will cover costs related to all programme phases except personal expenses, visa fees or any local airport taxes and departure fees. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2019. African Development Bank — Investments in Agricultural Infrastructure in Africa
Through the Agriculture Fast Track (AFT) Fund, the African Development Bank provides initial funding for agriculture infrastructure projects spanning the entire value chain – from production to market. Co-funding is encouraged, but not necessary, provided that the requested amount does not exceed US$1 million. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), government agencies, and non-governmental organizations from Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania are eligible to apply. European Commission — Environmentally Sustainable Beef Meat Industry in Uganda
The European Commission aims to minimise the environmental impact of livestock and prioritise animal welfare in Uganda. The priority under this call are smallholders and small beef-related agribusiness to ensure an environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient, low-emission, local and regional meat industry. Grants requested under this call for proposals may fall between €300 thousand and €1.3 million. The lead applicant must have an operational presence in Uganda, but applications from least developed countries and international organizations are welcome. Belmont Forum — Research for Ocean Sustainability
The Belmont Forum calls for global partnerships of academics and non-academics to address conservation and the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. This call aims to support medium-size research projects with a direction of three to four years, with a recommended budget of up to €1.5 million. Research consortia must include at least three participating partner organizations established in three different countries to be eligible under this call. Participating countries are: Brazil, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, USA, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros and Madagascar. The Climate Smart Agriculture, East Africa (CSA-EA) program offers opportunities for the placement of two PhD students to be enrolled in one of the graduate schools of Wageningen University. The selected PhD students are expected to spend about 18 months in Wageningen (Netherlands) and 30 months in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, and/or Uganda).
