NERC’s International Opportunities Fund announces grants that help UK researchers develop and strengthen collaborative links with international partners. Pump Priming grants are a maximum of £40 thousand for up to two years. Pump Priming Plus grants are a maximum of £250 thousand for up to three years. The Know-how Exchange Program co-finances the transfer of know-how and best practices from EU to non-EU member countries of the Central European Initiative (CEI). Thematic areas in the current call by KEP-Italy include energy, environment, and agriculture and rural development (among others). Proposals are submitted by organizations in CEI member states which are also member states of the European Union for knowledge transfers to non-EU member states of the CEI. The non-EU members of the CEI are Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine. The maximum grant is €40 thousand. The U.S. diplomatic mission to Vietnam seeks candidates for the fall 2017 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellows Program on civic engagement, environmental issues, and social entrepreneurship and economic development. The program is open to Vietnamese citizens between the ages of 18 and 25, and who meet criteria on university education, leadership qualities, and English language. The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI Association) makes cash grants of US$ 2,500 to support national or sub-national activities in developing countries for capacity building related to environment and sustainable development. Grants can be used to foster partnerships, develop in-country technical capacity, improve data compatibility and access, and increase political support for spatial data infrastructure. The Global Grand Challenge Awards invite applications from startup enterprises that are attacking the world’s most difficult problems. Three teams in each of 12 tracks will be invited to California in August 2017 to present their work at the Singularity University Global Summit EXPO. One winner will be selected from each track to be assisted with recognition and exposure. The tracks include disaster resilience, energy, environment, food, water, and others. The Scottish Government announces the 2017 round of funding for its Zambia and Rwanda development programs. The focus regions are Central Province in Zambia, and Western and Southern Provinces in Rwanda. Among the priority themes are agriculture, and renewable energy as a component in other priority themes. Applications are restricted to Scottish-based organizations. The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering grants of up to US$1,500 for stories about pressing issues in the Congo Basin. The main focus is to show the impacts of environmental change on human lives and ecosystems. For this reason, EJN prioritizes stories about forests, water, climate change, wildlife, extractive industries, conflicts, and crimes. Proposals should focus on the production of one or more story, map, or data visualization element. The deadline for applications (English, French) is 20 May 2017. Link
With financial support from the government of Sweden, the AAU will make grants of up to US$600 per person to help post-graduate university students acquire practical skills via internships of 12-24 weeks. The grants are for training purposes only, not for the completion of theses or dissertations. The program is open to students in AAU member institutions. The Research Council of Norway invites proposals addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The call has a special emphasis on global education, but is also open to other themes — including the environment, climate, and renewable energy. Norwegian research institutes, universities, and university colleges are invited to apply for funding. Proposals should include leading international development researchers and researchers from developing countries, when relevant. The application deadline is 24 May 2017. Link

The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees at Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow’s home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU will award about 20 fellowships across all subject areas. The application deadline is 25 August 2017 for submissions to RONPAKU from Japanese universities; applicants need to send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisors in advance of this deadline.
