The UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability is the Secretariat for ProSPER.Net (Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network) in the Asia-Pacific region. The ProSPER.Net Leadership Programme helps its participants to develop interdisciplinary skills for sustainable development initiatives in local, regional, or global contexts. This year’s theme is ‘Engineering Approaches to Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Towards Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific Region’. The U.S. Department of State announces the notice of funding opportunity for the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative. GIST supports projects that strengthen young innovators and entrepreneurs in low and middle income countries by connecting them with American businesses and experts. Proposed projects must address in-country training activities and pitch competitions; interactive online activities; early-stage investment networks; and website maintenance. Funding of US$1 million will be made available. Eligibility is limited to U.S. non-profit organizations and educational institutions. In partnership with Microsoft, the National Geographic Society seeks proposals from around the world that focus on the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to better monitor and manage Earth’s natural systems for a more sustainable future. The grants will support the creation and deployment of open source trained models and algorithms in the focus core areas of climate change, agriculture, and water. In partnership with OpenGlobalRights, FRIDA provides a 5-month training program to young feminists on climate and environmental justice activism and digital journalism. Women between ages of 18 and 30 based anywhere in Sub Saharan Africa, Asia, the MENA region, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe are eligible to apply. Fellows will receive mentorship and are expected to dedicate 4-5 hours per week (total of 15-20 hours per month) from August to December 2019. Applications are submitted through a short Google form. The French Agency for Development (AFD) seeks applications from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), preferably in partnership with other international/local non-profit organizations, to enhance the quality of the coastal environment and to contribute in developing the Sri Lankan Blue Economy potential. Proposed projects under this call may focus on, but are not limited to, environmental education, awareness and advocacy, and the preservation of the coastal biodiversity and natural heritage. The program offers grants of up to US$ 1,000 to young individuals (aged 18-35 years) and non-profit groups in Vietnam. The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers travel fellowships to cover the cost of attending the annual New Horizons in Science briefing for journalists. The annual conference brings together top-rank scientists and leading science reporters for an in-depth look at seminal developments in science. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the day-long professional workshops sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers. The maximum reimbursement provided is $1,200.
