Copernicus Masters is an international innovation competition that honors the best solutions using earth observation data and applications to solve global challenges. The Space data for “Blue Economy” Challenge, sponsored by the European Commission, seeks solutions that have the potential to stimulate new markets related to the Blue Economy and to contribute to environmental protection of marine resources. The winner of the Blue Economy challenge receives €10 thousand. All participants have the chance to win an additional €10 thousand if chosen as the overall Copernicus winner. The U.S. Department of State provides financial assistance to ocean conservation projects in developing countries. A grant for up to US$200 thousand will be awarded for work that will support effective management of Marine Protected Areas in selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. The proposed program could include at least one technological solution to improve MPA surveillance. The U.S. Department of State announces funding for capacity building with the aim to support the environmentally sound management of plastic waste in West Africa to reduce ocean pollution. A grant for up to US$179 thousand for work that will support a developing country in West Africa (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, Sierra Leone, or Togo) to combat plastic waste leakage in the environment through improving waste. The U.S. Department of State announces funding for logistics, meetings coordination, and digital communications to support environmental cooperation between all the U.S. Free Trade Agreement countries. Funding of up to US$197 thousand will be awarded to be used for logistics and meeting coordination support for in-person and virtual meetings, as well as digital communications to promote environmental cooperation programs. The SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development Award invites applications for projects or initiatives related to plastic waste management practices in schools and communities. The entry should demonstrate how the school’s program transforms the community, reduces plastic usage, or cleans the ecosystem of the community. Any public and private kindergarten, elementary schools, secondary school, vocational or technical school in Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam is invited to apply. The European Commission (EC) supports the development eco-tourism activities with focus on community-based, economically-viable ecotourism enterprises, conservation and heritage areas. The Commission provides funding to projects that develop community-based and nature-based tourism activities, diversify the tourism offer in Botswana, promote eco-friendly tourism practices and conservation activities in and around protected areas, and implement activities that increase the participation of local communities in the tourism industry. Applicants may request between €500 thousand and €750 thousand for the implementation of their proposed project. The Lion’s Share supports initiatives in communities dependent on wildlife-based tourism to withstand the current Covid-19 outbreak and other future global shocks. Small grants of US$20 thousand to US$50 thousand will be made to non-profit organizations in developing countries to implement local community actions to protect severely threatened ecosystems or wildlife. The international WIN WIN Youth Award seeks applications from young people between the age 13 to 29 who play an active role in the creation of a more sustainable future. The 2020 award theme is Biodiversity, therefore, applicants are invited to submit ongoing projects, work, or initiatives linked to biodiversity conservation. The winner of the WIN WIN Youth Award will receive SEK20 thousand at the award ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden (October 2020). The award will cover travel expenses for the winner and one more person. WIOMSA seeks innovative projects (demonstration and pilot projects) that address modern-day marine sustainability challenges to bridge the gap between marine research and innovation.
