U.S. Department of State — Marine Protected Areas and Ocean Conservation

The U.S. Department of State will fund projects in marine protected areas and reduced nutrient pollution affecting coastal waters. Grants in Category 1 will strengthen compliance capacity for marine protected areas in the Bahamas, Belize, Honduras, and Panama. Grants in Category 2 will fund projects to more effectively manage marine protected areas in Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania. Grants in Category 3 will aim to reduce nutrient pollution in waterways, coastal waters, and the ocean. Applications are accepted from non-profit organizations and educational institutions in the USA and other countries, and from public international organizations. U.S. Department of State — Cleaner Production in Central America

In support of its trade agreement with the region, the U.S. government offers funding to promote cleaner production practices and technologies in micro, small, and medium enterprises of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Eligibility for funding extends to nonprofit NGOs, limited liability companies, educational institutions, and public international organizations. Ornithological Council (OC) — Grants for Bird Research and Conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean 2016

The Ornithological Council makes grants for projects in ornithological research and conservation in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. In 2016, the OC will make one or more grants for US$10 thousand. An applicant must be willing to join an OC member society if he/she receives an award and is not already a member. Lincoln Institute of Land Policy — Research on Land Policy and Urban Development in Latin America 2017

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy calls for proposals on several themes related to land policy and urban development in Latin America. One of these themes is climate change and environmental risks, such as for populations living on flood plains and steep slopes. The Lincoln Institute will pay for the research project based on the scope of work and the justification of the proposed budget. The deadline for proposals is 01June 2016. Link

Belgian Development Agency (BTC) — Fair and Sustainable Trade in Precious Metals

BTC’s program in Trade for Development offers grants to improve the market access of organizations that are committed to fair and sustainable trade, including trade in precious metals. Among other objectives, project activities include the reduction of negative environmental impacts of mining and metals extraction. Grants ranging from €50 thousand to €100 thousand are available to private nonprofit and private for-profit organizations (if composed of 50% or more cooperative producers) in the following countries: Algeria, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Dem Rep Congo, Ecuador, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Rwanda,Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. U.S. Department of State — Reducing Mercury Use in Andean Gold Mining

The U.S. State Department plans to award up to US$145 thousand for 18 months to design and test mobile training centers to reduce mercury use in small-scale gold processing in Bolivia and Peru. Eligibility for funding extends to higher educational institutions and research centers in the USA that have established relationships with regional institutions and/or organizations. The closing date for applications is 13 June 2016. Link
