Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. The Africa program includes a course on Climate Change – Mitigation and Adaptation for participants from Botswana, Mozambique, and Zambia. This round of the training programme has a special focus on water resources for agriculture, water supply, hydropower, etc. Candidates representing government organisations, private companies, and NGOs are encouraged to apply. In order to strengthen the battle against international wildlife trafficking, the U.S. government will fund training to law enforcement, customs officials, and wildlife authorities in crime scene management that includes how to correctly extract a DNA sample for forensic analysis, as well as training on evidence gathering and chain of custody. The primary countries of engagement may include one or more of the following countries in Africa: Angola, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, and Uganda — and one or more of the following countries in Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. European Commission — Marine and Coastal Biodiversity in Lebanon
The EC announces funding to enhance the protection and sustainable development of maritime resources in Lebanon. More specifically, activities should address how to recover the country’s affected marine ecosystems and to develop marine and coastal biodiversity. Eligibility for grants extends to NGOs and universities in Lebanon, member states of the EU, and partner countries and territories covered by the European Neighborhood Instrument — in addition to qualifying international organizations. U.S. Agency for International Development — Improved Nutrition in Senegal
USAID announces funding of a 5-year project through the program Feed the Future to improve diets among the Senegalese population, particularly young children and women of reproductive age in selected zones of the country. Efforts may include expansion of nutrient-dense and bio-fortified crops such as orange-fleshed sweet potato, high-protein maize, iron-rich millet, moringa, mung bean, Sahel apple, and others — in addition to project activities that will improve food governance and increase women’s empowerment on matters of food selection. National Geographic — Chasing Genius
The Chasing Genius Challenge invites ideas from around the world to make the planet more sustainable; to improve global health; and to feed nine billion people by mid-century. Each idea should be submitted as a one-minute video. The submitted ideas will be evaluated according to criteria of innovation, creativity, viability, and inspiration. The winner in each of the three categories will be awarded US$25 thousand, in addition to a fourth winner chosen on the basis of popular vote. The submission period is 01 June through 31 July 2017. U.S. Department of State — Building Capacity for Wildlife Protection in Africa and Asia
The U.S. government will fund nonprofit NGOs and institutions of higher education to reduce the poaching and trafficking of wildlife through effective programming in key locations of Africa and Asia. The primary countries of engagement may include one or more of the following countries in Africa: Botswana, Cameroon, Chad, Congo (Brazzaville), Gabon, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, and/or, one or more of the following countries in Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The project will provide wildlife rangers and police with non-lethal equipment such as boots, uniforms, backpacks, hydration equipment, appropriate outdoor clothing, patrol equipment, tents, radios, communication equipment, and vehicles. Proposals must demonstrate an existing and on-going relationship with the organizations responsible for park, range, or game reserve management and/or with the recipient organization of the equipment. Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative — SIANI Expert Groups 2017-2018
SIANI offers seed funding to expert groups that support its vision and mission to understand emerging issues in food security and nutrition in low-income countries. Expert groups comprise a diverse group of stakeholders (academia, NGOs, private business, government, etc.) to prepare publications, organize events, and engage in other activities that strengthen the Swedish resource base and their partners. Expert groups do not need to be geographically located in Sweden. However, if an expert group is established outside Sweden, it needs to have a clear link to the Swedish resource base and Swedish funded activities. The deadline for proposals is 15 July 2017. Link

The EC will make grants to coordinate with China on its revised wildlife protection law, which calls on government at all levels to strengthen publicity, education, and awareness raising on wildlife protection and to support civil society organisations in doing so. Eligibility for funding extends to NGOs in EU member states and in other eligible countries that are engaged in wildlife protection, and that have cooperation arrangements with the State Forestry Administration of China.
