Smart Villages — Photo Competition on Sustainable Rural Energy

Smart Villages announces a photo competition on the theme of how energy access changes the life of rural communities around the world. The contest will emphasize the concept of energy “smartness” i.e., how energy is being used in productive, innovative, and even entrepreneurial ways. The competition is open to everyone regardless of nationality, background, age, and experience. The competition offers several cash prizes up to US$2 thousand for the overall winner. Photos must be submitted before 30 April 2017. Link

São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Climate Change — Training and Networking in Climate Change

The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Climate Change will hold a 2-week training and networking session in July  2017 on the science of climate change.  The Advanced School will focus on five themes, and it will be led by speakers from several countries. The School will accept about 100  graduate students and early-career scientists from Brazil and other countries. The Advanced School will be conducted in English. A limited number of travel grants is available. The application deadline is 31 March 2017.  Link

U.S. Agency for International Development — Asian Women Entrepreneurs in Clean Energy

The USAID Private Financing Advisory Network-Asia, the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, and the Asian Development Bank announce a joint call for proposals for women entrepreneurs in clean energy. Selected woman entrepreneurs and organizations supporting the selected entrepreneurs will receive mentoring support from USAID PFAN-Asia with an aim to secure funding to up-scale their operations. The program is open to women entrepreneurs and organizations in the private sector and in public-private partnerships in  Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use — Capacity Building Workshop

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), in collaboration with NASA and the University of Missouri, will be conducting a capacity building workshop on the theme of “Interdisciplinary Remote Sensing, Modeling, and Validation of Environmental Processes.“ The workshop, to be held in Ghana in June 2017, is for advanced doctoral students and early-career scientists across all countries of West Africa. It will focus on advanced analysis of satellite and climate data for multi-sectoral applications, including climate, agriculture and water resources. The workshop will take sponsored and self-sponsored participants. Tuition and workshop fees will be waived for sponsored participants. The deadline for expressions of interest is 15 March 2017. Link

University of Bergen — PhD Course on Poverty, Climate Change, and Sustainability

The Bergen Summer Research School offers parallel short courses for PhD students and young researchers on themes of urgent societal problems focusing on the transition to sustainability. One of the six courses will concentrate on the link between poverty and climate change. Stipends to participate in the course are available for qualified individuals who are currently enrolled for studies and carrying out research in a list of eligible developing countries.  The application deadline is 01 March 2017. U.S. Agency for International Development — Off-Grid Solar Energy for Africa

The “Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development” (SOGE) seeks to provide 20 million households in Sub-Saharan Africa with access to modern, clean, and affordable off-grid electricity from solar sources. USAID welcomes applications from U.S. and non-U.S. private businesses and social enterprises that are solar manufacturers, distributors, and service providers. Grants will range from US$500 thousand to US$1.5 million. USAID requires a private financial commitment in the ratio of at least 2:1 to the amount of a grant. Franklin Institute — Bower Award for Science Achievement 2018

The Bower Award of US$250 thousand is made to individuals who have made significant contributions to understanding and quantifying perturbations of natural systems within the biosphere, atmosphere, or hydrosphere in the age of the Anthropocene. The competition is open internationally. Self-nominations are accepted. Notices of intent to nominate should be sent by 30 April 2017. The deadline for nominations is 31 May 2017. Link

Indo-US Science and Technology Forum — Bhaskara Advanced Solar Energy Fellowships and Internships 2017

The IUSSTF invites Indian applicants to apply for the Bhaskara fellowships and student internships for research on solar energy at reputed scientific/technological institutions in the USA. Preference will be given to research aimed at issues of solar energy in India. Eligibility extends to Indian PhD students and researchers in publicly-funded R&D laboratories, S&T institutions (non-private), and recognized academic institutes in India. Indo-US Science and Technology Forum — SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships for Indian Researchers

The IUSSTF invites Indian applicants to apply for the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships. The objective is to introduce Indian scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities. These awards will enable young Indian scientists and technologists of all disciplines, under the age of 35, to interact with the U.S scientific community. The focus areas include bio-energy, energy, science of climate change, glaciology, and several others. The deadline for applications is 28 February 2017. Link

European Energy Community — Summer School 2017

The Energy Community aims to extend the EU internal energy market to South East Europe and beyond. The Secretariat of the Energy Community announces the 2nd Energy Community Summer School that will take place in FYR of Macedonia in August-September 2017. The Secretariat welcomes applications from postgraduate students, researchers in energy-related disciplines, and young professionals from government institutions, companies, think tanks, and NGOs in the region of the Energy Community. The non-EU members of the Energy Community include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, FYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, and Turkey. Participation is free, including tuition and accommodation costs. However, travel costs are borne by the participants. The application deadline is 31 March 2017. Link
