Central European University (CEU) announces two Visiting Fellowship Programs in academic year 2017-18. The Faculty Development Fellowship is available to applicants from selected academic institutions in Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, and Myanmar. The Research Excellence Fellowship is offered to academics employed in higher education institutions and/or academic research institutions in any country of the “Global South.” The subjects for fellows include environmental studies and energy studies — among many others. Eligible applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent, and should be nationals of eligible developing countries. Fellowships cover travel costs, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Five Rolex Awards will be offered to young leaders (ages 18 to 30) anywhere in the world who have ground-breaking proposals or initiatives that will help expand knowledge of the world and improve the quality of life on the planet. Applications can be submitted in three categories: the environment, applied science and technology, or exploration. Projects should be planned for the future, or be only partially completed. With support by the Newton Fund, Innovate UK invites businesses to work with Brazilian partners on innovative urban development solutions in Brazil. Subject areas include management of urban water and sanitation, renewable energy, addressing natural disasters, and others. GIST is the flagship U.S. government international program on innovation and entrepreneurship. GIST participants in low and middle-income economies can develop skills, build networks, find mentors, and access financing through a combination of in-country training, a global pitch competition, interactive online programming, and direct connections to U.S. experts. PAN is an advisor to the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF) for grants to civil society in subjects of environment and sustainable development. PAN Africa invites African organizations to submit short proposals that may qualify for GGF support. Themes important to PAN include phasing out highly hazardous pesticides; alternatives to pesticides and DDT; monitoring the effect of pesticides on human health and environment; and opposition to GMOs. Proposals should include project objectives, methodology, expected results, and an activities budget. The requested contribution should not exceed US$3,500. Proposals must be sent to PAN by e-mail no later than 25 November 2016. Link
India’s DST calls for proposals of bilateral research in thematic areas that include energy, environment, climate change, plant-based medicines, and many others — varying with each program area. Taiwan’s Cheng Kung University will host Gro Bruntland Week in March 2017 to honor Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Director-General of the World Health Organization. Five young female scientists, one from Taiwan and four from developing countries, will be invited to present their research related to public health and sustainable development. TVG Note: This can possibly include research related to food production and nutrition, water supply, or other environmental influences on health. France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborates with other French ministries to jointly support the Hubert Curien Partnerships for international exchanges in science and technology. The program periodically publishes calls for proposals. They currently include the PHC Pamoja partnerships with Kenya (application deadline is 16 December 2016); the PHC Xu Guangqi partnerships with China (deadline 15 January 2017); the PHC Napata partnerships with Sudan (deadline 17 January 2017); and the PHC Cai Yuanpei partnerships with China (deadline on 19 February 2017). The IAS-STS in Graz (Austria) promotes interdisciplinary research on interactions among science, technology and society. Its annual fellowship program supports international research fellows for up to nine months of research at the Institute, and visiting scholars for shorter periods. Themes include gender, technology, and environment; life sciences and biotechnology; low-carbon energy systems; eco-design and public procurement; and sustainable food systems. The Monsanto Fund makes grants to strengthen agricultural communities in several countries around the world. Grants of US$25 thousand and more are available to tax-exempt charitable organizations for activities and projects that address farmers’ education and training; food security; community water and sanitation; and other local needs. Monsanto’s international grants are administered at the country level. The Fund presents a list of eligible countries. Monsanto accepts international applications during two periods each year. The first period ranges from 01 January through 28 February. The second period ranges from 01 July through 31 August. Link
