Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia — Project Grants

REDAA invites proposals for locally led initiatives to improve evidence, tools, and governance that can help people and nature thrive together in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Successful proposals will receive medium-scale grants between £200 thousand and £500 thousand for research-to-action initiatives lasting two to four years. Applications close 31 July 2023. Manomet — Conservation of Neotropical Shorebirds

The Manomet small grants program seeks to promote the conservation of shorebird species and populations breeding in Latin America and the Caribbean and build the capacity of early-career conservationists and researchers in the Neotropics. Grants of US$3,000 are available. Awards are only available to projects carried out by nationals and/or residents of countries and territories in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Projects should be developed in close collaboration with a local conservation agency, research institution, or non-governmental organization. The deadline for applications is 15 August 2023. Smithsonian — Climate Change & Environmental Justice Fellowship

The Smithsonian launches two new in-residence fellowship programs: Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowship and Smithsonian Environmental Justice Fellowship. Each program will support a cohort of 2-5 fellows who will receive a stipend to conduct independent research that utilizes Smithsonian resources (e.g., data, facilities, expertise). Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins and propose to conduct research in-residence for a period of no less than 12 months and no more than 24 months. Candidates will receive a stipend of US$62 thousand per year, plus a research allowance up to US$5 thousand. The application deadline is 31 August 2023. Link to guidelines

Turing Foundation — Grants for Marine Ecosystems and Sustainable Land Use

The Foundation’s interests include marine ecosystems and protected areas, along with projects promoting sustainable agriculture and land use. Projects in marine conservation focus heavily on the Asia-Pacific Coral Triangle, but also include marine protected areas in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation’s funding for sustainable land use is oriented mainly towards West Africa. Most grants are to Dutch and international organizations that work with local partners. Turing does not accept unsolicited applications, but it invites brief project summaries. More information

BirdLife International — Conservation of Natural Grasslands

The BirdLife in the Americas seeks proposals for the conservation and research of natural grasslands and their birds in the region. The “Small Grants for Grassland Conservation” are aimed at individuals working or conducting research in grassland conservation. The prioritized countries for this call are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Applicants may request up to US$12 thousand in funding for their project. University of the Sunshine Coast — PhD Scholarships in Tropical Forest Restoration

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers five PhD scholarships for projects related to restoration of degraded tropical forest landscapes. Graduate students will undertake their research as part of a large reforestation project working with communities to restore degraded landscapes in the Philippines. Applicants must be based in Australia or willing to relocate to Australia. The scholarship includes a monthly salary, tuition of 3 years and an allowance for relocation. Earth Journalism Network — Reporting on Air Pollution

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites journalists from Nairobi (Kenya) to apply for a story grant to report on air pollution in the city. Journalists are encouraged to examine the key sources of air pollution in Nairobi and its impacts on the local environment, economy and health, among other topics. Auckland Zoo — Small Grants Program

The Auckland Zoo’s Conservation Fund provides funding for ongoing projects or pilot programs with clear conservation value. The current round of funding will concentrate on innovative projects in Africa focusing on mitigating human-wildlife conflict that have tangible conservation outcomes for threatened wildlife. Grants are up to a maximum of NZD$5 thousand, but most grants are smaller. The application must represent a minimum of 25% of the project’s overall budget. Applications close on 30 June 2023. UK Government — Darwin Initiative: Main Projects

The Darwin Initiative funds capacity building, training, research, and education in support of the major conventions on biodiversity — focusing on the developing world. The program invites applications for main projects, partnership projects, and fellowships. Applicant organizations can be based in any country. Projects must benefit biodiversity and local communities in developing countries. Darwin projects should be a minimum of £100 thousand and no more than £600 thousand. The application deadline for partnership projects and fellowships is 03 July 2023, and they are applied through organizations, not individuals. Darwin Initiative
