Development Bank of Latin America — Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean

CAF Development Bank of Latin America supports research projects that contribute to the understanding of the costs and benefits that tackling climate change and preserving the environment entail. A maximum of three prizes will be awarded. Each winning proposal will receive a research grant of up to US$15 thousand to carry out the project. Proposals may be submitted individually, as a team or through an institution in English or Spanish. Applications must be submitted by 11 February 2022. Find the call

Lloyd’s — Science of Risk Prize 2016

The Science of Risk Prize for 2016 invites research papers in two categories: natural hazards; and systems modelling. Among other types of risks, Lloyd’s is interested in the impact and management of climate change. The competition offers prizes of £5 thousand for the best research paper in each category. Applicants should be working in a university department or government research organization. The closing date for submissions is 25 September 2016. Link

Birdfair/RSPB Research Fund for Endangered Birds — Applications 2016

The British Birdwatching Fair (Birdfair) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) jointly provide small grants for research on birds listed by IUCN as “endangered,” “critically endangered,” or “data deficient.” Priority is for researchers working in their own countries, particularly in collaboration with BirdLife’s partners. The maximum grant is US$2 thousand, with preference for smaller requests. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2016. Link

U.S.-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE) — Off-Grid Clean Energy in India, 2nd Funding Round

The PACEsetter Fund aims to accelerate the commercialization of off-grid clean energy by providing early-stage grants that allow businesses to develop and test innovative products, business models, and systems. Projects must focus on small-scale systems that improve the viability of off-grid renewable energy for under-served individuals and communities in India that do not have grid-connected power, or that have limited or intermittent access. Grants will range from US$50 thousand to US$300 thousand.  The deadline for expressions of interest is 12 August 2016. Link

Association of African Universities — Training in Practical Skills

With financial support from the government of Sweden, the AAU will make grants of up to US$600 per person to help post-graduate university students acquire practical skills via internships of 12-24 weeks. The grants are for training purposes only, not for the completion of theses or dissertations. The program is open to students in AAU member institutions in southern and eastern Africa, and in Francophone member institutions. The deadline for applications (English, French) is 15 August 2016. Human Development Innovation Fund — Mawazo Challenge in Tanzania

The Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) is funded by the UK government to create social impact in education, health and water, and sanitation and hygiene (WASH) across Tanzania. The Mawazo Challenge invites ideas to design a competition or award scheme that will foster and support promising ideas to solve problems in these areas. The best three ideas will be awarded cash prizes, including five million Tanzanian shillings for the first prize. The application deadline (first stage) is 15 August 2016. Link

International Council for Science — Grants on Energy, Health, and Natural Disasters in African Cities

The International Council for Science (ICSU), in collaboration with partner science organizations, offers research grants on the inter-relationships among energy systems, health impacts of air pollution, land use and urban planning, adaptation to climate change, and disaster risks in African urban settings. Grants are up to €90 thousand for two years. Applications are welcome from early-career African scientists having no more than 10 years’ work experience following their PhDs or equivalent research experience. Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics — GOFC-GOLD Training Program

Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) is an international program to provide space-based and in-situ observations of forests and other land cover. These observations are intended to support sustainable management of natural resources and to help provide a better understanding of the terrestrial carbon budget. In association with START, GOFC-GOLD will hold its fifth data initiative in October 2016 for advanced training on access, management, use, and application of earth observation data. The training will be offered at the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics, Space Krenovation Park, in Thailand. The course is designed for young scientists associated with the GOFC-GOLD regional networks, especially in Southeast Asia. However, other scientists are welcome to submit a request to become a Fellow. The deadline for applications is 19 August 2016. Link

World Intellectual Property Organization — Indigenous Fellowship Program 2017-2018

The World Intellectual Property Organization offers the WIPO Indigenous Fellowship to build stronger capacity in the field of indigenous intellectual property law, and to strengthen capacity on intellectual property law and policy for indigenous lawyers and policy advisers. Subject areas include legal measures to protect traditional knowledge; traditional cultural expressions; and genetic resources. Applications are invited from indigenous persons who have the necessary legal qualifications, or equivalent in
practical experience and community work, to work within the WIPO Secretariat beginning in January 2017. The deadline for expressions of interest is 23 September 2016. Link

Santa Clara University — Global Social Benefit Incubator 2017

The GSBI at Santa Clara University (USA) is an annual program to strengthen social enterprises that use science and technology to address problems of people living in poverty. Past participants include many in water supply, energy, agriculture, and environment in developing countries. The GSBI Accelerator assists selected participants with business plans and other capacity building in support of investment. The GSBI Accelerator invites applications from social entrepreneurs around the world. The application deadline is 21 October 2016. Link
