The British Birdwatching Fair (Birdfair) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) jointly provide small grants for research on birds listed by IUCN as “endangered,” “critically endangered,” or “data deficient.” Priority is for researchers working in their own countries, particularly in collaboration with BirdLife’s partners. International Council for Science — Grants on Energy, Health, and Natural Disasters in African Cities
The International Council for Science (ICSU), in collaboration with partner science organizations, offers research grants on the inter-relationships among energy systems, health impacts of air pollution, land use and urban planning, adaptation to climate change, and disaster risks in African urban settings. Grants are up to €90 thousand for two years. Applications are welcome from early-career African scientists having no more than 10 years’ work experience following their PhDs or equivalent research experience. Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics — GOFC-GOLD Training Program
Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) is an international program to provide space-based and in-situ observations of forests and other land cover. These observations are intended to support sustainable management of natural resources and to help provide a better understanding of the terrestrial carbon budget. In association with START, GOFC-GOLD will hold its fifth data initiative in October 2016 for advanced training on access, management, use, and application of earth observation data. The training will be offered at the Sirindhorn Center for Geo-Informatics, Space Krenovation Park, in Thailand. The course is designed for young scientists associated with the GOFC-GOLD regional networks, especially in Southeast Asia. Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC) — Tailor-Made Training for Organizations
The Netherlands Fellowship Programs (NFP) include Tailor-made Training to build the capacity of an organization’s staff members. The programme is open to organisations in education, research, government, and civil society. Tailor-Made Training accepts proposals of organisations in NFP partner countries submitted jointly with a Dutch training provider. Application forms are available via the Netherlands embassies. Priorities include proposals focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, and proposals focusing on food security. Funding is up to €75 thousand, with a co-funding requirement of at least 20%. British Council — Workshop Grants for Researchers
The Researcher Links Workshops bring together early-career researchers from the UK and partner countries to allow them to make international connections that can improve the quality of their research. The current call is for bilateral workshops of 3-5 days between the UK and Russia. Proposals must be joint applications, with one coordinator based at a UK institution and one based in Russia. Qatar National Research Fund — Women in Science
The Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), in partnership with CRDF Global, welcomes applications from Qatari and Qatar-born female PhD students and MSc graduates for the Women in Science fellowship. The selected WIS fellows will spend four months at a U.S. university department under the direction of leading female researchers for work in one of the following four topics: ecology of infectious diseases; environmental science; cyber security; or materials science in energy. CRDF Global will coordinate the travel arrangements and accommodations for all selected fellows for the duration of the fellowship. The application deadline has been extended to 30 September 2016. West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development — Young Agricultural Entrepreneurs in Africa
In collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank, the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD) invites applications for a one-year mentoring process on agricultural technologies and innovations. The program aims to reach 1,000 “agripreneurs” in West and Central Africa. Candidates are expected to have a business idea or a start-up related to agriculture, preferably in relation to the 15 technologies developed by CORAF/WECARD. The program Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) is a partnership of Swedish universities, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The program invites applications from African researchers to a one-week training course on effective research-to-policy communication for agricultural development. The course will be held in Nairobi during late January 2017. Applications are invited from lecturers and post-doctoral researchers currently affiliated with universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and who have received their PhDs within the past five years. The program Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) is a partnership of Swedish universities, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). AgriFoSe2030 offers a one-week course for post-doc students and senior researchers who have a demonstrated interest in scientific reviews, and who would like to learn meta-analysis methodology. The course will be held on the ICRAF campus in Nairobi in November-December 2016. Preference is for participants involved in AgriFoSe2030. PhD students in the final phases of their studies can also be accepted if highly motivated. Students from both natural and social science / economics backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
