University of Florida — Research on Livestock in Ethiopia, Nepal, and Rwanda
With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the University of Florida manages the Feed the Future Livestock Systems Innovation Lab as a five-year program of research to improve the nutrition, health, and incomes of the poor through increased livestock productivity and the marketing and consumption of animal-source foods. The program seeks to upgrade technologies, management practices, skills, knowledge, capacity, inputs across livestock value chains, and policy environments that foster sustainable intensification and increased profitability of smallholder livestock systems. The focus countries are Ethiopia, Nepal, and Rwanda. Participation is open to qualified universities, institutes, and other organizations in the target countries, USA, and elsewhere. The program will fund research grants up to US$1 million, and focus grants up to US$100 thousand. The deadline for research concept notes is 23 June 2016. Link
EU Horizon 2020 — INDIGO Young Scientist Competition 2016
The India-Europe Research Partnerships (INDIGO) announces the 2016 Young Scientist Competition for PhD students and early-career researchers in India and the EU. Six young researchers will be invited to the EU-India Cooperation Days in September (Goa, India) to present their ideas on a global or societal challenge pertinent to research cooperation between EU and India in the fields of bio-economy, biotechnology, or bio-based energy. International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) — Assessing the Impacts of Agricultural Insurance
3ie invites proposals under its new thematic window on the impact of agricultural insurance for smallholder farmers. 3ie hopes to address the gaps in what works and what does not in programmes of agricultural insurance that aim to mitigate risks in producing agricultural crops and livestock. Applications will be accepted for evaluations in low and lower middle-income countries, and in countries of priority to the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). Applications are invited from legally registered organisations and consortia of registered organisations. The research team should include at least one researcher who is a national of the country in which the programme is being implemented. The first phase will provide up to 14 grants for formative or process evaluations of not more than US$75 thousand each for a period of 8-10 months. Research Council of Norway — Norway-China Research on Hazardous Substances and Pollution
The Research Council of Norway sponsors the MILJØFORSK program (2016-2025) to generate new knowledge about biodiversity, cultural environments, ecosystem services, hazardous substances, and pollution. The current call for proposals will focus on pollution sources, inputs, and spread – including the re-mobilisation of hazardous substances as a result of climate change – as well as the effects of pollution impacts on the environment and health. Orskov Foundation — Grants for University Students in Sustainable Land Use
Orskov makes grants to support student projects in agriculture and sustainable land use in developing countries. Preference will be given to training that emphasizes animal, plant, and soil interactions. Projects should have the potential to alleviate poverty and to provide sustainable environmental benefits, including adaptation/mitigation to the impacts of climate change. Applications are invited from individuals in lower-income and lower middle-income countries. The program includes student grants up to £2,500 to support studies at a university or similar organization other than the university/college in which the applicant is registered. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) — RONPAKU Fellowships for PhD Students 2017
The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees from Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow’s home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU will award about 20 fellowships across all subject areas. The application deadline is 24 August 2016 for submissions to RONPAKU from Japanese universities; applicants need to send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisors in advance of this deadline. The Ornithological Council makes grants for projects in ornithological research and conservation in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
