The Woodard & Curran Foundation announces grants to address the problem of water scarcity in the USA (Track 1), and that use technology to address water issues relating to climate change (Track 2). Track 2 offers funding of US$100 thousand over three years for projects located anywhere in the world. Eligibility for funding (Track 1 and Track 2) extends to nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations in the USA. However, projects in Track 2 located outside of the USA should normally include non-U.S. partners. Sponsored by the Tata Group jointly with Australian Aid, the Water Abundance XPRIZE invites teams to revolutionize access to water by creating a device that uses renewable energy to extract a minimum of 2,000 liters of water per day from the atmosphere at a combined operating and capital cost of no more than two cents per liter. Eligibility to compete for the prize extends to teams of scientists, engineers, academics, entrepreneurs, and innovators from all over the world. The grand prize is US$1.5 million, and the competition will award additional (milestone) prizes of US$250 thousand. The registration deadline is 28 April 2017. Link

The World Development program at the Waterloo Foundation offers grants in subject areas that include water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). The Foundation gives funding priority to UK-based charities, many of whom work in close partnership with NGOs based in the countries in which they operate. Waterloo will also accept applications from organizations in developing countries if they can supply acceptable references in the UK. Grants are usually between 1-3 years for a total of over £50 thousand, although very occasionally the Foundation will provide grants of over £100 thousand per year. The UK’s Natural Environment Research Council, in partnership with the UK’s Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council and India’s Department of Science and Technology, invite proposals on research to improve water quality. The programme aims to provide a better understanding of the sources and fate of different pollutants, and to support the development of management strategies and technologies to reduce pollution levels. Proposals are sought for collaborative projects involving researchers from both the UK and India. The deadline for notifications of intent to submit is 30 March 2017. Link

The International ReSource Award is a prize acknowledging social entrepreneurial thinking and leadership in addressing social and/or ecological issues related to sustainable water management practices in developing and emerging countries. Each of three finalists will receive US$20 thousand and expert assistance to further develop their proposals in order to compete for a first prize of US$75 thousand. Eligibility for the ReSource Award extends to charities, non-profit organizations, and revenue-generating social enterprises working in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene in the developing world. The Rabo Foundation Employeesfund is a part of the Rabobank Group, a provider of financial services that operates on cooperative principles in over 40 countries. The Employeesfund supports small-scale sustainable projects in education and water supply. For water projects, the areas of interest include improved water supplies and facilities for drinking water; agricultural irrigation; information projects; and integrated water management. Applications are welcomed from organizations that bank with Rabobank, and from Rabobank employees, in the Rabobank focus countries. The maximum grant request is €15 thousand. Sida funds short-term training in selected development topics for participants from developing countries. The programs include one on sustainable urban water and sanitation. The invited countries are Bangladesh, Kenya, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Uganda. Candidates may be nominated by authorities, institutions, universities, NGOs, water utilities, or other private companies active in the water and sanitation sector. The RBC’s Blue Water Project makes grants for watershed protection and safe drinking water in two programs. (i) The Community Action Grants are up to $10 thousand for local and community organizations in Canada, USA, and the Caribbean. (ii) Leadership Grants ranging from $10 thousand to $100 thousand are available in North America and other countries where RBC does business (including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Chile, and Uruguay). USAID will fund a 5-year program in Madagascar (the “RANO WASH program”) to expand the country’s supply of potable water and improve sanitation in approximately 250 rural communes. The program will work with the Government of Madagascar, NGOs and private enterprises, academic and research institutions, and others to achieve sustainable water management for households and municipalities. USAID aims to assist Jordan with water-saving technologies and practices. The measures include interventions for safe water collection and storage; improved public awareness about water conservation; incentives for financing water infrastructure; and others.
