The “Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development” (SOGE) seeks to provide 20 million households in Sub-Saharan Africa with access to modern, clean, and affordable off-grid electricity from solar sources. USAID welcomes applications from U.S. and non-U.S. private businesses and social enterprises that are solar manufacturers, distributors, and service providers. Grants will range from US$500 thousand to US$1.5 million. USAID requires a private financial commitment in the ratio of at least 2:1 to the amount of a grant. The Bower Award of US$250 thousand is made to individuals who have made significant contributions to understanding and quantifying perturbations of natural systems within the biosphere, atmosphere, or hydrosphere in the age of the Anthropocene. The competition is open internationally. Self-nominations are accepted. Notices of intent to nominate should be sent by 30 April 2017. The deadline for nominations is 31 May 2017. Link

The IUSSTF invites Indian applicants to apply for the Bhaskara fellowships and student internships for research on solar energy at reputed scientific/technological institutions in the USA. Preference will be given to research aimed at issues of solar energy in India. Eligibility extends to Indian PhD students and researchers in publicly-funded R&D laboratories, S&T institutions (non-private), and recognized academic institutes in India. The IUSSTF invites Indian applicants to apply for the SERB Indo-US Postdoctoral Fellowships. The objective is to introduce Indian scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities. These awards will enable young Indian scientists and technologists of all disciplines, under the age of 35, to interact with the U.S scientific community. The focus areas include bio-energy, energy, science of climate change, glaciology, and several others. The deadline for applications is 28 February 2017. Link

The Energy Community aims to extend the EU internal energy market to South East Europe and beyond. The Secretariat of the Energy Community announces the 2nd Energy Community Summer School that will take place in FYR of Macedonia in August-September 2017. The Secretariat welcomes applications from postgraduate students, researchers in energy-related disciplines, and young professionals from government institutions, companies, think tanks, and NGOs in the region of the Energy Community. The non-EU members of the Energy Community include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, FYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, and Turkey. Participation is free, including tuition and accommodation costs. However, travel costs are borne by the participants. The application deadline is 31 March 2017. Link

The Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi provides graduate-level education and research to produce future world leaders and critical thinkers in advanced energy and sustainability. The Institute offers four types of scholarships, including the IRENA scholarship for aspiring master’s students with a desire to work in the field of renewable energy. Up to 20 applicants are awarded this scholarship at Masdar Institute every year, with support from the Government of the United Arab Emirates. Scholarship students may study in any one of the nine master’s degree programs offered at Masdar Institute. The application deadline is 31 May 2017. Link

This is the second of three calls planned under the “UK-China Joint Programme in Low-Carbon Innovation.” The call defines five areas related to offshore renewable energy for joint research participation by UK and Chinese scientists and engineers. UK researchers will be funded with five awards in the order of up to £800 thousand per award over three years. The Natural Science Foundation of China will contribute up to 3 million RMB per project to support Chinese researchers. Expressions of interest need to be submitted by 10 February 2017. Link

The Parrot/Pix4D Climate Innovation Grant consists of hardware and software for field research to foster innovation in understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Proposals should include a geographical/mapping dimension using UAVs and Pix4D photogrammetric software, as well as multi-spectral imagery related to the technical capabilities of the Parrot Sequoia camera.  Proposals are invited from anywhere in the world.  The deadline to apply is 01 February 2017. The National Research Council of Thailand is partnering with the National Natural Science Foundation of China for research on renewable energy. Grants will support short exchange visits between Thailand and China on general or specific subjects related to renewable energy for a maximum of 30 days per year. Funding will be available up to a maximum of three years. Each application must designate two Principal Investigators, one in Thailand and one in China. The deadline for proposals is 17 February 2017. Link 

The Climate Strategies Accelerator (CSA) aims to identify and support leaders with big ideas to address the complex problem of climate change. The 2017 theme is “end the age of oil.”  CSA selects prototype projects and program leaders in progressive stages, beginning with a Breakthrough Lab of intensive networking and proposal development.  At the end of the Breakthrough Lab, the CSA may choose to invest in one or more candidates, who would then become program leaders, receiving US$1-2 million per year for a three-year grant period to pursue their ideas. The CSA welcomes applications worldwide.  The application deadline to participate in the the Breakthrough Lab is 31 January 2017.  Link
