The GPSDD seeks innovative proposals for data production, dissemination, and use. This year’s call is anchored around two themes: “Leave No One Behind,” and the Environment. The focus in Environment is to bring together new sources of data (big data, geospatial and earth observation, citizen-generated, IoT, and open data) to support environmental challenges related to climate change and urban resilience. Smaller amounts of funding (starting at US$25 thousand) are made for riskier, unproven innovations at the pilot stage. Larger amounts of funding (up to US$250 thousand) will be awarded to proposals which have a clear justification. The pilot funding round will close on 01 September 2017. Link

Adaptation Futures is the biennial conference of the Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA). The Conference provides an opportunity for international networking and dialogue with more than 1000 participants from academia, government, civil society and business — all aiming to take climate adaptation forward. Early-career researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate and will be accommodated in as many sessions as possible. Adaptation Futures 2018 takes place from 18-21 June 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa. Applications for attendance grants will be accepted from 15 October 2017 to 15 January 2018. Link
Smogathon aims to fight air pollution through technology. Start-ups will compete for $25 thousand in cash and $75 thousand as a contract to implement their innovation in Krakow, Poland. Smogathon welcomes participation from any group worldwide that works as a registered company, start-up, foundation, or research group with a legal entity. The best submissions will compete in regional semi-final competitions in Berkeley, London, Warsaw, Bangalore, and Hong Kong. The Weather and Climate Science for Service Partnership for Southeast Asia, supported by the UK’s Newton Fund, aims to provide knowledge and capacity to address high-impact weather and climate events in Southeast Asia. The program aims to advance the understanding of tropical meteorology for both research scientists and forecasters in the UK and partner institutes in Southeast Asia. The current call for proposals will focus on the role of tropical waves on the weather of Southeast Asia. The grant is expected to be up to £300 thousand for two years. The Energy and Environment Partnership with the Mekong Region (EEP Mekong) announces its eighth call for proposals on clean energy. With financial support from the Government of Finland, EEP Mekong will support clean energy projects in the private sector that are close to commercial maturity, but that need a limited amount of bridge finance. Window 8A is for civil society organizations; Window 8B is for the private sector. Projects should be based in one of the following countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, or Vietnam. The Scottish Government’s Climate Justice Innovation Fund (CJIF) is open to any Scottish-based organisation, working with an in-country partner or partners, to support climate justice-related projects which demonstrate innovation in the field. CJIF projects should be implemented in one or more of Malawi, Rwanda, or Zambia. Awards are up to £100 thousand for grants over a maximum of three years. Projects must support the beneficiary country’s development priorities. The application deadline is 07 August 2017. Link

The UK’s EPSRC invites research proposals that address the energy distribution challenges faced by developing countries. Proposals to this call must focus on sustainable local energy networks, including off-grid to grid transitions. Principal investigators must represent UK research institutions. Appropriate collaborators in one or more low- or middle-income countries are a mandatory requirement. Applicants should submit an expression of interest by 17 August 2017. Link

The MIT Climate CoLab organizes contests to solicit the world’s best ideas to prevent and adapt to climate change. Some contests pose social and political questions, while others focus on issues in science and technology. Each year, the contest winners are invited to a conference at MIT’s campus in the USA, where a pool of prize funding is shared among the best ideas. The Climate Co-Lab has recently posted seven new contests, each with a deadline on 10 September 2017. Link
FRIDA announces a special grant round for young feminist and young women-led groups focused on climate and environmental justice in targeted regions and countries. Grants of up to US$5 thousand for one year (renewable) will be made to groups founded or led by young women or trans youth (under 30 years) that are committed to advancing and defending women’s rights from a feminist perspective; working towards climate and/or environmental justice; and that meet other defined criteria. Eligibility extends to women’s groups formed in the past few years (2011-2017) in specified countries and territories of the Pacific Islands; Asia; Sub-Saharan Africa; Latin America; and Georgia. The 2017 Community Solar Innovation Awards will honor innovative enterprises that utilise solar energy to improve the lives of poor communities in the developing world. Hogan Lovells will make ten awards to businesses and non-profit organizations in developing countries which are locally-led and which use solar energy systems or solar innovations to significantly help the lives of women and girls. The winners will receive support services consisting of capacity building, pro bono legal support, publicity, and support in replicating the enterprises in other regions.
