In collaboration with the United Nations, Green Cross International makes the Green Star Awards to recognize individuals and organizations that have made remarkable efforts to prevent, prepare for, and respond to environmental emergencies – as well as to integrate environment with humanitarian action across the world. The 2017 edition of the Green Star Awards will be presented in June 2017 in Nairobi. There is no cash award, but travel expenses to receive the award will be covered. The India-Europe Research Partnerships (INDIGO) announces the 2016 Young Scientist Competition for PhD students and early-career researchers in India and the EU. Six young researchers will be invited to the EU-India Cooperation Days in September (Goa, India) to present their ideas on a global or societal challenge pertinent to research cooperation between EU and India in the fields of bio-economy, biotechnology, or bio-based energy. The winner of the competition will be awarded a fully-covered trip to a scientific conference of her/his choice in Europe or India. The deadline for expressions of interest is 01 July 2016. Link

In support of its trade agreement with the region, the U.S. government offers funding to promote cleaner production practices and technologies in micro, small, and medium enterprises of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Eligibility for funding extends to nonprofit NGOs, limited liability companies, educational institutions, and public international organizations. The Research Council of Norway sponsors the MILJØFORSK program (2016-2025) to generate new knowledge about biodiversity, cultural environments, ecosystem services, hazardous substances, and pollution. The current call for proposals will focus on pollution sources, inputs, and spread – including the re-mobilisation of hazardous substances as a result of climate change – as well as the effects of pollution impacts on the environment and health. Up to NOK 18 million will be available for projects that involve the participation of Chinese partners. The application deadline is 07 September 2016. Link

Finland funds the Higher Education Institutions Institutional Cooperation Instrument to support collaboration between higher education institutions in Finland and partner universities in developing countries. All subject areas are relevant. Grants will range from £300 thousand to £700 thousand, up to 80% of total project costs, for up to three years. The partner countries of highest priority are Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Somalia, Tanzania, and Zambia. The EC’s Maritime and Fisheries Fund will support trans-national regional collaboration to improve the blue economy in sea basins important to Europe, i.e., the Atlantic, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean, and North Sea. Each consortium should focus on a specific blue-growth technology or value chain. Examples include biotechnology, aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism, tidal or offshore wind energy, and others. Each consortia will develop a strategic investment plan as well as bankable demonstration projects. Applicants established in certain non-EU countries (defined in the announcement) are eligible to participate in Blue Economy if they are necessary to achieve the objectives of the action. The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees from Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow’s home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU will award about 20 fellowships across all subject areas. The application deadline is 24 August 2016 for submissions to RONPAKU from Japanese universities; applicants need to send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisors in advance of this deadline. The Earth Journalism Network announces grants funding for news stories about environment and development in the Congo Basin. These stories will be published on the platform InfoCongo.org. Subject areas may include illegal timber and wildlife trade; the impact of climate change on Congo forests; social and environmental impacts of projects for gas and minerals, roads and ports, industrial zones, and other infrastructure; and examples of best policies and practices of sustainable investment and project development. The program will make grants in the range of US$1,500 to US$5,000 to support the selected reporters. Applicants must be working as a journalist or studying in a journalism program. Preference is for applicants based in a country of the Congo Basin, and/or applicants who can demonstrate that their news stories will positively influence development in the Congo region. The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (SEAMO BIOTROP) aims to increase the knowledge and skills of ASEAN professionals and students on a wide range of topics in tropical biology. Unless otherwise indicated, training courses are conducted at the SEAMEO BIOTROP headquarter in Bogor, Indonesia. Priority is for nationals of SEAMEO member countries, especially in the sponsored courses. The current list of BIOTROP courses and seminars are scheduled from May through October 2016. Application forms should be submitted to the respective course coordinators at least one month in advance of any training event. Link
