Instrumentl is a team of former nonprofit development staff, scientists, and software engineers who share the aim of helping researchers to find and apply for grants. The focus is researchers within the ecological and environmental sciences. Instrumental has compiled a list of research grants that have application deadlines during the next few months, April-October 2017. The geographical scope and eligibility requirements vary with each grant program, including several that support research in the developing world. The EC funds the program Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in European Overseas Territories (BEST) in order to fund actions on the ground, both at the local and regional level. BEST 2.0 is open to applications for projects in the overseas territories of the Caribbean, Pacific, South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Polar/Sub-polar regions. Small grants are up to €100 thousand; medium grants are €100 thousand to €400 thousand. Potential applicants include local civil society organisations; small for-profit organisations; municipalities; OT governments and their departments and services; European Member State bodies; and regional and international organisations. Each year, the WCN organizes conservation events (expos) in the USA, where wildlife conservationists discuss issues about endangered species around the world. Non-profit organizations are able to request free exhibition space at these events, offering them opportunities for networking and publicity. The remaining expo in 2017 will be held in San Francisco in October. Applications for exhibition space will be accepted through 15 July 2017. Link
Administered by WWF Hong Kong, the Asian Waterbirds Conservation Fund supports the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their wetland habitats in the East Asian – Australasian flyway. Grants are up to US$5 thousand per program or project. The application deadline is 31 October of each year. Link

The EC will make grants in support of forest conservation and sustainable development in the region of dry forests, chaco, cerrado, and pantanal regions corresponding to ZICOSUR in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Project activities should focus on ecosystem conservation; support for sustainable economic development; strengthening of environmental governance; and provision of local services such as community water supply. Grants will range from €1 million to €2.5 million, varying with cost shares. Eligibility for funding extends to civil society organizations established in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. The Nando Peretti Foundation supports a wide range of charitable causes that include nature conservation with a focus on birds and wildlife in Europe and developing countries. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations and associations, which register with the Foundation. In year 2017, the periods for new registrations are 28 February through 17 March; 31 May through16 June; and 31 October through 17 November. Link
The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok invites proposals from organizations interested in organizing a conference that examines current marine environmental issues in the seas of Southeast Asia. Proposals should encourage think tanks and academia to engage in a comprehensive conversation examining and analyzing international issues related to environmental challenges in the seas of Southeast Asia. USAID’s regional office in Central America invites proposals to conserve biodiversity in targeted coastal-marine areas and associated upland ecosystems; to decrease degradation of forest and mangrove landscapes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resilience to climate change; and to enhance climate-smart economic opportunities and sustainable use of natural resources (“biocommerce” ). The Christensen Fund makes grants to indigenous-led and community-based organizations for projects that combine biodiversity with cultural diversity. Pre-proposals are accepted for consideration in the following programs: African Rift Valley; Central Asia; Northwest Mexico; Melanesia; Global; and San Francisco Bay Area. Most grants are in the range of US$50 thousand to US$100 thousand for one or two years. The application period for pre-proposals is 01 August through 31 August, except for the Melanesia Program (01 September through 30 September). Link
The OTS manages a research fellowship program to support field research in tropical biology and related fields. The program offers three types of awards: pilot awards for exploratory research; thesis research fellowships; and ECTS-GS fellowships. Most awards are restricted to three OTS field stations in Costa Rica. Exceptions are one annual fellowship for research at the Cocha Cashu field station in Peru, and the Hovore-Horn Entomology awards in any Latin American country. Proposals may be submitted in English or Spanish. The application deadlines are 01 March and 01 October. Link
